 Chain The Square 

Definition:
 

From eight chain thru formation with regular couples: Each center couple will do a complete right and left thru with the outside couple they face. As outsides pull by into the center they join left hands with the one they face, courtesy turn so that man faces original facing direction and then Veer left to pass by the other center couple and form parallel two faced lines. Finishes in parallel two faced lines.

 Circle And Sweep 

Definition:
 

From an 8 chain thru: Circle 1/4 (left); original centers (actives) Sweep 1/4 as others Bend the Line.

 Circle And Tag 

Definition:
 

From a static square or facing couples: Designated actives lead right or join hands with opposite as indicated and circle half, then individually Quarter Left and complete a Tag the Line movement as designated then take the next call (In, Out, etc.)

 Destroy The Line 

Definition:
 

From a Three and One Line (with the opposite facing dancer on the end): The regular couple does a Wheel and Deal action as the mini wave couple does a Recycle. Finishes as couples facing. From a Three and One Line (with the opposite facing dancer in one of the center spots): The regular couple does a Wheel and Deal and the mini wave couple does a Recycle--finishes with one couple in front of the other (if the "regular" couple is on the right end, they finish in front and if on the left end, they finish behind the mini wave couple). NOTE: It seems probable that this move will come to be called Cycle And Wheel.

 Ends Run And Hinge Your Neighbor 

Definition:
 

From parallel waves or two-faced lines: Ends Run and then Hinge (with each other) to form a wave across the set. Centers of this wave Trade and then do a Left Turn Thru with the wave ends. Meanwhile the new ends Circulate one position and face in. Finishes in eight chain thru formation. NOTE: The "Neighbors" here are the wave centers rather than the more usual meaning of ends and adjacent dancer in the wave.

 Generate The Column 

Definition:
 

From column formation--girls followed by boys: Boys leads a Recycle followed by their adjacent girl to form "staggered" two faced lines. Lead couples Turn and Deal (Half Tag In) to fall in behind the other couple. Then as couples step forward as in Half Tag to form parallel two faced lines. Finishes in parallel two faced lines.

 Quarter Thru

Same as Slide Thru. (author unknown)

Version #2

From a wave: Ends do a "Lines Divide" while the centers Hing and step forward to stand to right of end dancer (if from a right hand wave) or to left of end dancer (if from a left hand wave). Finishes with couples back to back. (Gordie Loomer 1968)

Version #3

From two right hand parallel waves: Ends and adjacent dancers (neighbors) face each other and Pass Thru. Centers now Pass Thru (right shoulders) and move up to stand to the left of the outside dancers. Finishes in lines facing out. (Dick Bayer 1969)

Cross Quarter Thru

From facing pairs: Couples do a Crosstrail Thru and without stopping do a Quarter In and Pass Thru. Finishes with couples back to back. (Bill Harrison 1974)

COMMENT: Still another meaning for Quarter Thru. This one can be called directionally.

GENERAL COMMENT: Still another movement called Quarter Thru (and Three Quarter Thru) by Holman Hudspeth has been adopted as one of the Basic Calls of Challenge Dancing. See Hinge Thru below.

From facing couples with a boy and girl in each couple: All Right-hand Pull By; normal couples - turn back alone, sashayed couples - girl Courtesy Turns the boy.

 Scoot And Tag (Right/Left etc.) 

Definition:
 

From parallel two faced lines: Couples facing out do a Tag the Line (Right, Left, In, Out or Zig Zag) and the couples facing in Turn Thru with the diagonally opposite couple and step into the taggers' vacated spots. Finishes in two faced lines, lines facing in or out or three and one lines.

 Spin Star Thru

Version #1

From facing couples or a wave: Do a Spin the Top and as the ends (girls) move up they Star Thru with the men finishing the 3/4 arm turn in the center. If girls are in the center, it should be a Slide Thru rather than a Star Thru. Finishes with couples facing or couples back to back. (author unknown)

Version #2

From eight chain thru formation or parallel waves: Spin Chain thru but finish with a Star Thru (or Slide Thru) instead of forming waves. Finishes with lines facing in or out. (Dick Bayer 1969)

COMMENT: One involves a Spin the Top and the other a Spin Chain Thru.

 Spin The Gears 

Definition:
 

From parallel waves or eight chain thru: All arm turn half, new centers arm turn 3/4. Those in the wave across the set do a Fan the Top and arm turn 3/4 as the new ends (outsides) Circulate twice. Finishes in parallel waves at right angles to starting waves (with a little adjusting).

 Spinning Wheel 

Definition:
 

Like a Chain The Line One And Two Thirds--i.e. Ends arm turn 3/4, new centers Trade, ends arm turn 3/4, new centers Trade and ends arm turn 3/4.

There was an entire dance routine in the 40's called "Spinning Wheel" written by Jerry Long, Boise, Idaho.

 Star Cast 

Definition:
 

From parallel two faced lines: The couples facing in face each other on the diagonal and Star Thru. Those facing out Cast Off 3/4 (about) and fall in behind the others in double pass thru formation. Other finishing formations are possible, but dancers must adjust somewhat to make square corners.

 Whirlwind 

Definition:
 

From couples facing: Girls start a Rollaway with a half sashay but as they meet they join right arms and turn 3/4 around as the men move (Veer) up to the left. Finishes in a two faced line. NOTE: The name is the same as that used for an entire dance in which dancers in eight chain thru formation do a series of dive thrus and square thrus in the middle as the outsides divide and star thru.
