From lines of four facing in or out: Do an Explode, then centers Spin the Top as the ends pull by with a right and move around the outside to face in as a pair with the person they meet. Form four hand right hand stars with the outside people and turn the tar until the end who moved up a quarter (in the Spin the Top) can lead out to make a line facing in. NOTE: This one too was similar to the Change A Web type pattern then being workshopped. Note that the entire movement went considerably beyond the Explode And Anything concept.

These two become a pair facing in on the outside of an eight chain thru formation. Simultaneously, the center four pass thru, quarter out, partner trade and then pass thru. Finishes in a static square with two couples facing out and two facing in. Load the Boat, along with Horseshoe Turn, started a whole trend of combination movements that still continues unabated.

An old call written by Holman Hudspith....I urge you to teach the call properly as over the years some callers in an attempt to come up with an easy teach violated the action so that it was only possible to use from 1P-2P lines not any line formation (apd) STARTING FORMATION IS A LINE OF FOUR....For our example we shall start with a 1P-2P line....The ends of the line will start circulating around the outside of the set..Passing by three dancers and when they pass number three turn to face into the set and couple up with the third one they passed... The center dancers in the line have the hard part to learn...The centers pass thru...1/4 out...partner trade then pass thru.....I present the center action a couple of ways when teaching it....CENTERS PASS THRU...TURN YOUR BACK TO YOUR PARTNER TOUCH INSIDE HANDS WITH YOUR NEW PARTNER THEN PARTNER TRADE WITH THEM NOW PASS THRU....Once they get the idea you can help by saying centers pass out..partner trade & pass thru..... ACTION ENDS IN AN EIGHT CHAIN THRU SET UP.... Also the action of a load the boat from standard lines equals a star thru.......

Ends facing out circulate half to become ends of a six hand wave. Ends facing in circulate once and a half and keep moving. Meanwhile those in the six hand wave turn half and the new ends of this wave now circulate once and a half and keep moving. The original ends now finishing their circulate once and a half replace these latter two on the ends of the six hand wave. The four dancers in the center of the wave arm turn half, then all six in the wave arm turn half, then the center four again arm turn but this time go 3/4 as the other four dancers move up to the nearest end of waves. From a wave or facing couples: All arm turn half, centers then arm turn 3/4 while the ends move up a quarter to form the ends of a new wave turn 90 degrees from the original wave. The call Spin The Top is correct for both Right and Left-Hand Waves although the directional call Left Spin The Top is generally used for Left Hand Waves. If the call is directed to facing couples, they do the first arm turn by the right (or by the left if the call is Left Spin The Top). BACKGROUND NOTE: Holman Hudspeth, in my opinion, has been the most original of all the square dance inventors. He consistently tries to break new ground with his ideas rather than expand on other moves already in existence. While he can't be right every time, very often his ideas have opened up entire areas of experimentation that had remained unthought of until he pointed them out. Spin The Top really established the 3/4 arm turn--before that it had been frowned upon as too difficult from a dancer orientation standpoint. Many of Holman's ideas have survived under different names from the ones he gave them, but the ideas themselves are still with us. You'll see the name Hudspeth appearing in just about every section of this or any other book that deals with original ideas in square dance choreography.

From a four person box: Leader folds into adjacent spot while trailer walks ahead to replace the leader ahead. From facing pairs: Those designated fold into adjacent spot while others walk ahead to replace the opposite folder.

COMMENT: We might have done well to keep Walk and Turn--it could have been used in place of Box Circulate, Split Circulate and various modifications of Swap Around. In today's choreography, the term "Flip" is now used to describe the move Holman called "Turn."

From eight chain thru or double pass thru formation: Zip Code #1--center dancers turn back to back and Cloverleaf outside the set stopping behind the inactives but facing each other. Zip Code #2--same dancers continue and pass right shoulder and stop back to back. Zip Code #3--same dancers continue to next position to face each other (set is in lines of four facing in). Zip Code dancers travel around the outside in this way to the "station" number specified. There are eight stations around the square. On Odd Zip Code numbers, active dancers face each other. On Even Zip Code number, they are back to back with each other. The couples facing in the center do whatever the caller directs them to do.
