OPENER - CLOSER    Basic

Circle left
Kawliga, was a wooden Indian standing over by the door
Fell in love with an Indian maid over by the antique store

Walk around your corner lady
Seesaw round your girl
Left allemande your corner, weave around the world
Poor old Kawliga, he never got a kiss
Swing your lady round and all promenade
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor old wooden head

FIGURE    Mainstream, corner progression

Heads square thru count me 4 hands & go
Meet your corner lady, a dosado
Touch 1/4, then scoot back for me
Boys run, a right & left thru
Send her back dixie style, make an ocean wave
Boys cross fold, swing & promenade
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor old wooden head

FIGURE (ALTERNATE)    Mainstream, corner progression

Sides promenade travel halfway around
Down the middle and pass the ocean there, extend
Swing thru for me, those boys run right
Couples circulate and ferris wheel
A double pass thru, cloverleaf & go
Centers pass thru, swing & promenade
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor old wooden head

MIDDLE BREAK    Basic

Four ladies chain go straight across the ring
Turn and chain those ladies right back home again
Put the ladies back to back, the men you promenade
Around the outside track and do a dopaso
Partner left and corner right
Partner left and then
Keep that gal and now you promenade her home
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor old wooden head

Kawliga Lyrics ID: 1050

Kawliga, was a wooden Indian standing by the door
He fell in love with an Indian maid over in the antique store
Kawliga, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer yes or no.

He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tomahawk
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped someday he'd talk
Kawliga, too stubborn to ever show a sign
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.

Chorus:
Poor ol' Kawliga, he never got a kiss
Poor ol' Kawliga, he don't know what he missed
Is it any wonder that his face is red
Kawliga, that poor ol' wooden head

Kawliga, was a lonely Indian never went nowhere
His heart was set on the Indian maiden with the coal black hair
Kawliga, just stood there and never let it show
So she could never answer yes or no.

Then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' Kawliga stayed
Kawliga, just stands there as lonely as can be
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.

Chorus

Lyrics by Hank Williams and Fred Rose.
Recorded by Hank Williams.
