Fred Goynes  

Fred Goynes was born in Sugarland, TX in 1946. He has four sisters and three brothers. Fred is the youngest. He grew up in Bloomington, TX. Fred graduated from Bloomington High School in 1965. He played several sports in high school. He was all district in football for 3 years and basketball in his senior year. During his senior year, he was also on the regional track team. Fred served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was an instrumentation technician (E4) in a S.A.C. base in Thailand. Fred first learned to square dance in Puerto Rico. After he moved back to Victoria, TX in 1969, a caller heard him singing "Gentle On My Mind", gave him a copy of the square dance record and asked him to do it the following week. Fred's first experience as a caller was with the Victoria Promenaders. Four years later, he attended Callers College in Hot Springs, AR. He started calling in Fun Valley in 1985. He started the Bay Swingers in Pt. Lavaca and the Mustang Squares in Ganado. Kim (his wife) and her parents (Edmond & Gloria Holub) were in one of Fred's classes. Fred became KPP's caller in 1991. The club was dancing in Katy's VFW hall. A long time KPP member (Shirley Holsworth) is Fred's Aunt. Fred was awarded "Caller of the Year" in 2009 at HSRDC's hoedown in Galveston. In 1994, Fred was in an accident at work which caused him to lose his left eye. He does very well managing with one eye. His wife, Kim, started home schooling when Rachel started 6th grade. Rachel is the only National Merit Scholar from Wharton county. Tyler graduated this year and plans to be an engineering major. Fred's 'Chicken Ranch' has 42 laying hens; producing 2-3 dozen eggs per day.
