Curtis Byars
Square Dance Caller

ID: 1243

Curtis Byars

Curtis grew up in South Carolina and later began calling in Houston in 1977 when his club caller dared him to do so! He was the Club Caller for the Hanger Squares in Friendswood and the Heiss Foots in Texas City. Although Curtis was in the construction business, he usually found time to teach Beginner square dance lessons. Many area dancers will remember Curtis and Vonda from FUN-STI-TOOT, the annual Gulf Coast Callers Coop weekend dance in New Braunfels. Curtis was often requested to sing "Statue of a Fool" at after-parties. He suffered two brain aneurysms, which were followed by two surgeries, in the attempt to repair them and passed away on Wednesday April 8, 2009.
