Kaleidoscope Squares  by Vic Ceder

Overview

The basic idea of Kaleidoscope Squares is to do Progressive Squares in a 'circle'.

Gloria Roth either invented Kaleidoscope Squares or used it frequently in exhibitions.

Setup

Start with 4-concentric squares:

kaleidoscope squares

I generally form Kaleidoscope Squares by having one square move into the center of the hall, then tell another square to get behind their counterparts, then do that twice more to get the above formation.

Explanation

Dancers in the inner square are the ONES, then next square around them are the TWOS, the next are the THREES, and those in outer square are the FOURS.

Dancers do the calls in their group of 8, then progress to the next group of 8 from Back-to-Back Lines on the call 'Move On' (usually followed by an 'Up to the Middle and Back' to orient the dancers to their new group of 8).

'Move On' means to take your line of 4 and walk forward to face the next line of 4 (like a big Bend The Line). This is not the same as 'Move On' in Progressive Squares, where dancers facing the next line do a Pass Thru.

A sequence ends with everyone back on their original starting spots.

Notes
  • The Ceder Square Dance Sysem (CSDS) program can do Kaleidoscope Squares.

  • Kaleidoscope Squares can also be done with 3 or 5 sets of 8-dancers. Instead of having 4 spokes of squares, have 3 or 5, since Kaleidosceope Squares is basically just Progressive Squares in a circle.

  • 16-dancer Kaleidoscope Tandems:

  • An alternative starting formation:
In this case, tell the squares at the side positions that Heads act as Sides and vice-versa.

  • For more information on Kaleidoscope Squares, see the book entitled Specialized Squares And Crowd Pleasers (1987) by Gene Trimmer. There are explanations on how to do an Eight Chain 32, how to modify Cloverleaf for Kaleidoscope Squares, and how to square your sets prior to a non-Kaleidoscope singing call.
