Shape Changing rules

  1. If the given call ends in a 1x4, a Diamond, or a Single 1/4 Tag, then there is only one possible ending formation.

    1. A 1x4 is split in half, and distributed as two 1x2 formations on opposite sides of the inside dancers.
    2. A Diamond or Single 1/4 Tag is split into 4 pieces, and distributed like the points of a Galaxy.
  2. However, if the given call ends in a 2x2, there are two choices:

    1. If the given calls starts in a 2x2, the Lines-to-Lines, Columns-to-Columns rule applies.

Each Center dancer determines whether their starting position within the overall formation is Lines or Columns. If starting as if Centers of Parallel Lines, they must finish as if they are Ends of Parallel Lines. If starting as if Centers of Columns, then they must finish as if they are Ends of Columns.

The final formation may not actually be Lines or Columns, since dancers can be T-Boned.

    2. If the given call does not start in a 2x2, the Long Axis rule applies. That is, original centers end in outside positions perpendicular to the long axis of the starting formation.

Only the original center 4 dancers need to concern themselves with this, as there is only one possible ending position for the original outsides.

      1. Upon hearing the words 'Cross Concentric', look at your formation and determine the long axis before you start to move, in case the given call ends in a 2x2.

        1. First, look only at the inside 4 dancers. If there is a long axis, use it!
        2. Otherwise look for the long axis of the overall 8-dancer formation.
        3. If no long axis (e.g., a Butterfly formation), look at the footprints of the Original Outside 4.
      2. Cross Concentric <anything> = Cross Concentric <nothing> + Concentric <anything>.

The ending position of the call should be the same whether the Cross Concentric is done at the beginning or ending of the call.

For example, from Parallel Waves after 1/2 Circulate:
Cross Concentric Recycle = Cross Concentric Nothing + Concentric Recycle.
      3. Another reason for the Original Centers to prefer their 4-dancer long axis: From unusual formations, it's easier to determine the long axis for a 4-dancers than 8-dancers, especially if phantoms are involved.
      4. The ending location of the Original Centers should not be dependent upon the starting location of the Original Outsides. For a call such as Recycle, the Original Centers should always end side-by-side as a Couple, regardless of where the outsides started.
