Many years ago, a youth tried his hand at "calling" on his
club's "Amateur Night". Then and there he knew he had found
his niche in life, and thus began a career that has brought
a smile to the faces of thousands. He called to his first
adult class in 1967, made it his chosen profession in 1972
and still looks forward to every night.
Jim has had the pleasure of teaching square dancing to children,
teens, regular square dance clubs, senior citizens groups, one
night stands and through night school classes. In addition, he
has been able to spread the news about our great activity while
teaching college and high school students the rudiments of
square dancing. This has been done through their regular class
sessions, and as an extra curricular activity. Jim currently
teaches at least one Basics class per year, and has clubs
ranging from Mainstream through Challenge One.
Weekends and summer months find Jim travelling throughout
Canada and the United States. He also has toured England
four times, Australia four times and had a most exciting
trip to Saudi Arabia. He has, thus far, had the pleasure
of calling in ten Provinces, the North West Territories,
and thirty States, including Hawaii and Alaska.
Jim has participated on the staff of numerous Conventions,
Festivals and Weekends, including English Mountain Resort,
the Inn at East Hill Farm, the Toronto and District Square
and Round Dance Convention, and the prestigious Washington D.C.
Spring Festival. Jim also attends, and calls regularly at the
Canadian and U.S. National Conventions.
Jim has been the host of numerous square dance tours throughout
the U.S.A., Bermuda, Mexico, Western Europe, the British Isles,
Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand.
Jim is a member of the Canadian Western Dance Instructors'
Association, and has been a member of CALLERLAB since 1975.
Locally, he belongs to the Toronto and District Square and
Round Dance Association where he has served as Vice-President,
President, Convention Program Chairman, and Convention Chairman.
He has recorded on the original Lightning S Label,
the 1978 Sets in Order Premium Records and Square Tunes
of Knoxville, Tennessee. Currently, Jim is recording
with Mountain Records, Ohio.
