Great Big Rollin' Railroad
Singing Union Pacific People 1970
  (Kalox 1221)   Vaughn Parrish

two columns

OPENER - CLOSER    Basic - SSD Week 4

Sides face, grand square
We're a great big rollin' railroad, one that everybody knows
We were born of gold and silver spike a hundred years ago
We're a thousand wheels of freight train, hear the diesel engine's power
We're the Union Pacific

4 ladies chain
You chain the ladies over then turn and chain 'em back
Turn the girl with an arm around, then promenade the track
We're a million miles of history shinin' in the sun
We're the Union Pacific and our story's just begun

FIGURE

4 ladies make a ring, circle to the left from where you are
Turn your partner by the left,
Turn your corner right, make a wrong way thar
Boys to the middle with the left hand in back up you know
Shoot the star, left allemande and then bow real low, weave the ring
From the green fields of the prairies to the blue Pacific shores
Swing and whirl the pretty little doll and promenade once more
Cross the flats at Salt Lake City on to Vegas and L.A.
We're the Union Pacific *and we got the right of way

MIDDLE BREAK

*Face your partner, Grand Q**
We're a great big rollin' railroad, one that everybody knows
We were born of gold and silver spike a hundred years ago
We're a thousand wheels of freight train, hear the diesel engine's power
We're the Union Pacific doin' ninety miles an hour
From the green fields of the prairies to the blue Pacific shores
We deliver your great cargo and come home rollin' home for more
We're a million miles of history shinin' in the sun
We're the Union Pacific and our story's just begun

**Grand Q: from home position, everybody face their partner. Curlique, the ladies star left 3/4, men promenade right 1/4. When you meet, dosado full around my friend. Curlique, men star left 3/4, ladies promenade right 1/4.
When you meet, dosado full around again. Curlique, the ladies star left 3/4, men you promenade right 1/4. When you meet, dosado go full around again. Curlique, men star left 3/4, ladies promenade right 1/4. You meet at home, dosado full around.

Cue sheet notes: This dance is the combined efforts of several people to whom we would like to say thanks for all their efforts. Vaughn Parrish caller and co-author of the dance, Vaughn's grandson who did the diesel horn in the background, Ross Crispino co-author of dance and author of the Grand Q figure. Ross is from Nampa, Idaho, retired from Union Pacific Railroad. Ross and his wife are very active in the square dance movement (Ross as a caller, and Penny as a round dance teacher and cuer). Thanks to Mike Brenneman, square dance caller from Omaha, Nebraska who helped coordinate all of this. Last, but not least, Mr. Edwin C. Schafer, General Director of Public Relations and Advertising, Union Pacific Railroad Co., Omaha, Nebraska who gave permission for us to record "Great Big Rollin' Railroad" as this is the Union Pacific Railroad song. Many thanks, C.O. Guest, Kalox Records.
