SWING STEPS =========== INTRODUCTION ------------ These definitions are for the LEADER's part of LINDY SWING (mostly level 3 and 4) as taught by Jonathan & Sylvia. These defintions compiled by: Vic & Debbie Ceder P.O. Box 841 Los Olivos, CA. 93441 www.ceder.net GENERAL DANCING TECHNIQUE AND HINTS ----------------------------------- Don't pull against one another on the Rock-Step. On handholds (in open position), elbow should be bent, out in front of body, parallel to the ground. When doing Under Arms, keep hand close to the top of follower's head. Spins should be done in place, using spotting. Keep ankles close together & knees slightly bent. Look at each other. Don't watch your feet! When doing Slides (as in Double Slide), think about pushing the feet into the floor. But don't push so far apart as to lock the knees! Don't bounce up & down. When doing a basic from dance position, don't wave the joined hands up-down or side-to-side. Minimize the "noise". DANCE POSITIONS --------------- The following are used as starting/ending positions for the dance steps: Basket position: Cross arm position: (Rename to DOUBLE Cross Arm position?) Facing dancers, R-H to R-H and L-H to L-H with the LEFT-hands above the RIGHT-hands. Dance position: side-by-side dancers (leader on L-side), leader's R-H above follower's waist (on her shoulder blade), follower's L-H on leader's R-shoulder. The remaining hands are joined, held out front. Facing dancers, both hands joined: Dancers are facing with hands joined (leader's L-H to follower's R-H and vice-versa). Open position: facing dancers with one hand joined (leader's L-H, follower's R-H) R-H to R-H: Same as open position, but RIGHT-hands are joined. Side-by-side position: Dancers are side-by-side (leader on L-side) with adjacent hands joined. (leader's R-H and follower's L-H). 1/2 Side Pass position: Leader is in front and to the LEFT of the follower. Leader's R-H is back, down by his R-side, holding onto the follower's R-H. Normal timing. Stay in place. Don't lean forward, stand straight up (don't bend over). 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward and slightly twist her hand downward. As in a Whip, just use the hand. On And, change hands behind her back. Grab her wrist. On 2, change hands again, grabbing the follower's wrist. Stay balanced as the follower might need it. 3-And-4: As in 3-And-4 of Lindy Single Hand Change. Rock-Step. Leader stays in place! Stand up straight (don't bend over). Don't tilt shoulders. Let the follower glance off me. Concentrate on pulling the follower forward instead of on changing hands. When done correctly, an Apache is very smooth & feels like nothing! On an Apache (or Lindy Single Hand Change), let the follower's wrist twist in my hand. If adding an Under Arm for the 3-And-4, don't let the follower's arm twist in my arm! Just start the Under Arm & allow the handhold to smoothly change and rotate over the follower's head. Make sure to place my hand directly over the follower's head, even if she tries to move away from me. Think about pulling the follower in to BRING HER BACK TO HER HAND instead of her hand to her back!!! On a "good" one, the follower shouldn't feel anything in her R-shoulder. Arm Slide (level 3) ========= From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip 3-4: On 3, as in Whip but release my L-H & keep my R-H on the follower's shoulder (keep it in contact with the follower for the remainder of this movement). On 4, we are FACING. 5-And-6: Slide my R-H down the follower's L-arm & do a trapeeze-style arm-catch, to be changed into a normal handhold on Rock-Step. Rock-Step: If next move is to be a Cross Body Spin, back up on both beats. Whip-like NOT Lindy-like. Keep in body contact throughout the entire movement! The difference between Arm Slide and Lindy Shoulder Spin is loss of contact! Variation: They taught a Whip-like (Snap) Arm Slide where the leader twists as in Whip & let go on 3 (much earlier). Barrel Turn (level 4) [13-MAY-92] *B ----------- From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull, step forward & rotate L-H hand CCW & turn such that we are almost back-to-back. The raised hand should be over and between our heads. We both simultaneously turn. The lead should be to pull our joined hands to a spot originally by the R-side of the leader's head. On 1, we should be shoulder-to-shoulder with our joined hands half-way between us. On 2, The hands are over the follower's head! 3-And-4: Follower turns (again). Rock-Step. Keep my L-H up the entire time until Rock-Step. This way, the follower's double turn is one smooth movement instead of two individual (jerky) turns. Jonathan and Sylvia each have a different way of leading this step! Jonathan's method has us both turn simultaneously on 1, Sylvia's method I do like a forearm tuck & spin her (then I turn) by using my forearm. Basket (level 2) ====== From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: Pull the follower forward with the L-H as if doing an Under Arm To Dance, but do not release the R-H. 3-And-4: Backup slightly whilst in Basket position. Rock-Step. Ends in basket position. Lead with the L-H (NOT the R-H). The lead should be identical to an Underarm To Dance. Keep the R-H low! Basket Truckin' (level 4) --------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: as in Basket. 3-And-4: as in Basket. Then do several of the following: 1-2: On 1, L-Heel (toe pointing toward the LEFT), turning away from each other. The leader must lead this big time by pushing the follower away (since she is expecting to do a Rock-Step). On 2, do a Step-Step (R,L) while turning inward to be a couple. This movement is done while slowly moving in a counter- clockwise circle. Don't go for distance! To get out: Do a basic, pulling the follower with my R-H to make her spin & immediately let go. Break Step (level 3) *7 *E ========== From dance position. 1-2: On 1, LEFT-foot forward On 2, freeze 3-4: On 3, RIGHT-foot forward On 4, freeze 5-6: On 5, LEFT-foot forward BUT NO WEIGHT ON IT On 6, freeze 7-8: On 7 & 1/2, LEFT. On 8, RIGHT. Rock-step. Ends in dance position. The leader must force the follower forward & make her freeze. Put more energy into this movement. Use the whole body to dampen the steps. Act as if sneaking away. Circle Reverse (level 3) -------------- From open position. This movement consists of 3 full 6-count basics. On first triplet of the first basic, pull the follower straight ahead, but I slide to the LEFT, continue moving clockwise in an open circle for 2 full basics (on Rock-Step, the Step is the R-foot crossed in front of the L-foot, the R-toe pointing toward the center of the circle). On the last basic, replace the second triplet by crossing the R-foot behind the L-foot, pivoting 360 degrees (CW), and changing hands behind my back. Competition Whip (With Under Arm) (level 2 or 3) ================================= From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: On 1, pull follower forward with the R-H & start running around the follower, draping my L-H in front of the follower's face. By 2, I should be behind her & slightly to the LEFT. 3-4: On 3, pull the follower backwards & go another 90 degrees around the follower & point my R-foot toward her. On 4, go another 90 degrees to end in my initial position. Also start turning the follower (if Competition Whip With Under Arm). 5-And-6: in place. (if Competition Whip With Under Arm, follower finishes turning). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Both pulls are done with R-H and are STRAIGHT AHEAD. Do not pull with the L-H since the follower will start turning, thinking it is a basket. "King Tut" Competition Whip (level 3) *6 --------------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: as in Competition Whip but on 2, my hands ON TOP OF AND IN FRONT of the follower's shoulders. 3-4: On 3, pull the follower backward (pull her shoulders NOT her neck!). On 4, hands over the follower's head. 5-And-6: Leader turns under the hands. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Keep both hands joined. Competition Whip To Twin Peaks To Basket (level 3) *C ======================================== From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: as in Competition Whip 3-4: as in Competition Whip With Under Arm 5-And-6: Keep turning the follower and KEEP FACING HER. Rock-Step: On Rock, turn Left 90 degrees. At this point, my R-H should be in the small of the follower's back, my L-H should be at my belly. 1-And-2: Under Arm to face 3-And-4: Pull follower into Basket position Rock-Step. Ends in basket position. Keep the follower as close to my body as I can. KEEP MY RIGHT-HAND LOW THROUGHOUT THIS MOVEMENT! Competition Whip With Unwrap Spin (level 3) --------------------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: as in Competition Whip 3-4: On 1 pull forward & step with the R-foot pointed toward the follower (hold on with both hands). On 2 step in front & spin the follower with my R-H. 5-And-6: (Follower turns) Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Corral Spin (level 4) [08-JAN-92] *9 ----------- From dance position. Tuck-Step: as in Tuck Spin. 3-And-4: Follower spins as I keep close to her body, almost trailing my R-H on her. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Corral Spin is similar to a Tuck Spin but ends in dance position. The leader stays in place. Use my L-H to turn the follower in place. Don't think about pushing the follower out as in a Tuck Spin. Have both of my hands near the follower's waist as she turns, especially my LEFT-HAND. The difference between Corral Spin and Tuck Spin is that on a Tuck Spin, I send the follower out ahead of me with my L-H, whereas on a Corral Spin, I also pull with my R-H so that the follower spins IN PLACE. Don't send the follower out in front of me. Counter Clockwise Turning (level 3) *8 ========================= From dance position. 1-And-2: Turn the follower (in place) counter-clockwise so that we are side-by-side (R-shoulder to R-shoulder). 3-And-4: Back up 3 steps around our common pivot point. Rock-Step: Open the follower up for the Rock-Step. The above movement is often repeated several times. Counter Clockwise Turning Variation (Flip Flop) (level 3) =============================================== From dance position. Same as Counter Clockwise Turning, but on 2nd basic: 1-And-2: On 1 pull the follower forward (to my L-side) with my R-H WHILE TURNING 1/4 TO THE RIGHT (so we are L-shoulder to L-shoulder). Walk forward for the And-2. 3-And-4: On 3 (or immediately before), do a U-Turn Back & go backwards as in a normal Counter Clockwise Turn. Rock-Step: In place (open up the follower). Cross Arm Alternating Turns (level 3) =========================== From cross arm position. 1-And-2: Follower under the arch. 3-And-4: Leader under the arch. This is like a Reverse. Leader crosses R-foot behind L-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in cross arm position. Keep hands together. Cross Arm Back-To-Back Tuck (level 4) *4 *7 --------------------------- From R-H to R-H. On the previous Rock-Step, push the follower backwards a little. 1-2: I do a tuck but turn to end back-to-back, changing my hand. Handhold is lightly on her wrist. On 1, turn 180 degrees, stepping on L-foot (feet apart, back-to-back); On 2, I freeze, but push the follower back for a Spin. 3-And-4: On 3, start sliding my feet together. By 4, finish sliding my feet together & start reaching backwards with my R-H. PROLONG THE SLIDE FOR THE ENTIRE TRIPLET. Rock-Step: to end in 1/2 Side Pass Position. Cross Arm Elbow Tucks (level 3) ===================== From dance position. Open up on the preceeding Rock-Step to put distance between us. On the elbow tuck portion, my (L) arm should be fully extended. Do 3 times, on 3rd one end facing. The follower must do her spins in place, keeping her elbows close to her body. The leader moves CCW around the follower, facing her throughout the entire movement. Cross Arm Inside Outside Under Arm Freeze (level 4) ----------------------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: similar to Inside Outside Double Under Arm BUT using the other hand. On 3, we should be forearm-to-forearm. 3-And-4: Under Arm & Freeze (do a Mel). On 4, hold. Rock-Step. As with Inside Outside Double Under Arm, be sure to change places. Cross Arm Lindy / Whip (level 3) *1 *5 ====================== From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: On 1, pull straight ahead, twisting clockwise, and immediately LET GO so I can place my hand on the follower's back! The pull is parallel to the ground. The lead should be slightly to the side NOT straight ahead. On And, start grabbing the follower by placing my R-H on her back. 3-4: as in Lindy / Whip. 5-And-6: as in Lindy / Whip. Rock-Step. Pull harder & bring my hand in towards my side before I let go. As with all Whips, STAY IN PLACE! DON'T LEAN BACK OUT OF THE WAY!!! Cross Arm Passing Hip Slide ("Nordic Track") (level 4) [13-MAY-92] *4 *6 --------------------------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Pull the follower straight ahead, without turning her or she will think it is a Cross Arm Lindy/Whip/etc. Get behind the follower & grab her hips (oooh!) with me leaning backwards. Don't get too much space between us. 3-4: On 3, pull her backwards & slide R-foot forward (L-foot back) to the follower's L-side; On 4, Slide L-foot forward (R-foot back). Also, turn 1/4 towards her (this will make the following Spin easier); 5-And-6: On 5, pull the follower backwards such that I go forward somewhat. Twist as in Whip in order to get the R-foot in front. Turn to the RIGHT on the L-foot to end in front of the follower (in our initial starting positions). Stay low during the turning. When turning, keep the R-foot in front of the L-foot. On And, keep turning. On 6, Step R-foot (in front of L-foot). Rock-Step. On the lead, think about slightly turning my wrist COUNTER CLOCKWISE so that it is difficult for the follower to turn as in a Cross Arm Lindy/Whip. This will hopefully make her move straight ahead. LEAD THE FOLLOWER DIRECTLY INTO ME INSTEAD OF LEADING HER STRAIGHT AHEAD. I WILL, OF COURSE, MOVE OUT OF THE WAY! On 3-4, Don't think about pulling & pushing the follower. Just use her as a post so that I can do my Slides. Cross Arm Pull Through (level 2 or 3) ---------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: On 1, pull follower forward, twisting CW and let go. The pull should be parallel to the ground. 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Like a Cross Arm nothing. We exchange places. Cross Arm Truckin' (level 4) [21-AUG-91] ------------------ From R-H to R-H. Same as Truckin' but with the leader's other hand. Cross Arm Under Arm Reverse (level 4) --------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Similar to an Under Arm To Dance NOT like a Cross Arm Whip (i.e., pull high & follow thru, not low & let go). We exchange places. 3-And-4: Leader turns Right 360 degrees as in Reverse. Rock-Step. Cross Arm Under Arm To Dance (level 4) ---------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Do an Under Arm to the follower but I turn 1/4 to the Right. On 1, drop my R-H & get it behind her back 3-And-4: Get the follower into dance position. I should now be facing my initial direction. Ends in dance position. Cross Arm Whip Unwrap Spin (level 4) [01-JUL-92] -------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: as in Cross Arm Whip. Make sure to have SPACE BETWEEN US. (Do NOT have my L-H on the follower's back). 3-4: similar to Whip but On 3, step more to my Left on the L-foot. 5-And-6: Follower Spins (DON'T HELP HER ... she'll do it by herself). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. This movement works best from a backwards handhold. Hold on with R-H until the follower wants to let go. (i.e., starting her second turn). Leader can put his L-H on the follower's R-shoulder which can be] used to lightly Spin her with. Cross Arm Whip Hand Change Spin (level 4) [14-AUG-91] ------------------------------- From R-H to R-H. Grab the follower's arm anywhere between the wrist and the elbow. Don't pull on the Spin since the follower already has momentum. Cross Arm Whirl Wind With Unwrap Spin (level 4) [19-FEB-92] *D ------------------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 12-Counts. 1-And-2: Pull the follower into dance position, keeping the joined hands behind the follower's back. Allow the follower's hand to rotate such that her palm is facing out. This is similar to a Cross Arm Whip but keep holding on with the R-H, ending with our R-Hs behind the follower's back. On 2, Leader steps in front to square up on the follower. But we need distance between us. 3-4: On 3, twist, turning 90 degrees to the Right and spiral inward towards the follower. Also roll forward on RIGHT-foot; On 4, roll backward on LEFT-foot; 5-6: On 5, roll forward on RIGHT-foot; On 6, roll backward on LEFT-foot; 7-8: On 7, roll forward on RIGHT-foot; Also, let go with the R-H so that the follower can start turning; On 8, roll backward on LEFT-foot; 9-And-10: Follower spins. Rock-Step. Let go on 7. Keep our R-knees hooked together. R-foot forward, L-foot backward & PIVOT. Practice with R-foot forward & L-foot backward, rocking forward & backward while moving in a circle. When we are in position to do this step, our R-legs are next to each other, inside the partner's leg. Our R-knees are together. Initially try standing still, twisting 90 degrees to get the correct foot position. Jonathan says to get chest-to-chest so that the upper body is touching. Think about turning with the shoulders. The R-shoulder should be moving backward, the L-shoulder should be moving forward. Cross Body Spin (level 3) =============== From side-by-side position. For the Rock-Step of the previous movement, the leader should back up a little by taking 2 small steps backwards. 1-And-2: On 1, cross my L-foot in front of the R-foot & pull the follower in a "6"-shape horizontal to the ground. On 2, I have turned 90 degrees Left & again crossed left foot in front to point it toward the follower. 3-And-4: in place. Rock-Step. Ends in facing dancers (the leader has turned Left 90 degrees, the follower has turned Left 270 degrees). Duo Cross Body Spin (level 4) [04-MAR-92] ------------------- Leader turns to the Left. On 1, we should be shoulder-to-shoulder (or back-to-back). On And, Just bring the R-foot next to the L-foot. Don't step backwards. Be sure to end with our elbows bent! Cross Kicks (level 4) [30-JUN-93] ----------- From R-H to R-H. 1-2: On 1, Touch L-foot back. Also push the follower backwards to make her do a Rock-Step. On 2, Step on L-foot next to R-foot. 3-4: On 3, Kick R-foot to the LEFT, turning 1/4 to the LEFT; On 4, Knee R-foot & turn 1/4 to face; 5-6: On 5, Kick R-foot to the RIGHT, turning 1/4 to the RIGHT; On 6, Step on R-foot (still facing to the RIGHT); Repeat 3-4, 5-6 ("Kick-Knee-Kick-Step") several times, turning 90 degrees on 4 and on 5! Keep elbows at the side. Slightly bend at the waist. There seems to be hopping throughout this movement. Getin: (Hip Tuck Duo With Leader Cheat) [30-JUN-93] From dance position. 1-2: as in Hip Tuck; 3-4: Step-Step, leader turning to the Left. Be sure to spot the follower (on 3-4) so that I can grab her R-H to push her back on 5; 5-6: RIGHT-FOOT ROCK-Step. On 5, push the follower backward for a Rock-Step so that we are both on the same foot. Then start 3-4, 5-6 as above Getout [30-JUN-93] Don't change places on this movement! Kick R-foot to the L (normal); Knee (turning 1/4) & LIFT JOINED HAND to start turning the follower Then: Kick(R)-Step (kick R-foot forward); Step-Step (Leader does a Step-Step, follower does a Triplet); Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Getout #1: Leader turns RIGHT, doing Kick-Steps in a Circle [12-AUG-92] 5-6: Kick(L)-Step; 7-8: Kick(R)-Step. Getout #2: (harder) [12-AUG-92] 1-2: On 1, Kick to the Right (normal); On 2, Step on L-foot next to R-foot (normal) BUT start to Spin the follower; 3-4: 5-6: On 6, Touch with L-foot; 7-8: Rock-Step. Make it real loose & keep your knees bent. Bend knees & slightly lean over at the waist. When turning back & forth, keep both hands up. Double Pump Whip (level 4) *5 *6 *8 *B ================ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip. 3-4: as in Whip but hold on to the follower (pull her in). 5-6: as in 1-2 of Whip. 7-And-8: as in last triplet of Whip. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Same as Whip but add two steps (do the 3-4 part twice). This feels somewhat like a Fake Whip. LET THE FOLLOWER FULLY EXTEND EACH TIME & be sure to do the Whip- twist. It should be really Whip-twisted & not wimpy. The pumping should be CONTINUOUS (In-Out-In-Out). Keep the Whip TWIST! STAY LOW!!! Double Pump Whip With Shoulder Spin (level 4) ----------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Double Pump Whip 3-4: as in Double Pump Whip 5-6: On 6, push my R-H to make her spin. My R-H should be grabbing the follower's scapula. 7-And-8: Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Double Shoulder Drape To Dance Position (level 3) ======================================= From cross arm position. 1-And-2: On 1, start a Follower Under Arm to exchange places. On 2, place my R-arm over my head. 3-And-4: Place my L-arm over my head, kcocking my R-arm away. Rock-Step: in dance position BOTH arms go OVER my head behind my neck. Keep elbows pointed out. Double Slide (level 3) ============ Verbal cue (or two quick hand squeezes). From open position. 1-And-2: as in Side Pass but the leader turns right 90 degrees. 3-4: "Cross-Slide" On "Cross", keep L-foot in place but point it towards the left (pivot on the heel), meanwhile move the R-foot in front of the L-foot (pointing the R-foot to the right at about 60 degrees). We should be in "bad ballet" position. Also bend our knees. On "Slide", slide feet apart. Think about pushing downward and do not jump. 5-6: "Hold-Step(L)-Step(R)". The Step-Step is on beat 5.5 and 6. Do the last 1/2 of a Side Pass (to end R-H to R-H). On the "Slide-Hold", the "Slide" can be drawn out and the "Hold" practically eliminated. *** on 5,6, which foot should be in front? *** Drop Spin (level 4) [26-AUG-92] *D --------- "Airplane position" From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. 3-And-4: Keep going around in a circle: "Behind-Side-Fall" On 3, Cross R-foot BEHIND. REALLY HOOK IT! On And, Step (L-foot) to the side. On 4, fall forward on R-foot in the "airplane" position. Aim to fall into the follower's R-shoulder. Hold on with R-H on the follower's shoulder blade so that we are (somewhat) in dance position. 5-And-6: On 5, push the follower out like a Walker Turn. Spin on R-foot while SLOWLY straightening up. (Bring my back up without straightening the knee). On 6, step on L-foot. 7-And-8: triplet in place. (optional: Leader Spins again). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. For the follower, this consists of 4 triple steps in a row. Do not stop the momentum of going around in a circle. On 3, be sure to CROSS R-FOOT BEHIND! SLOWLY straighten up or else you may wobble. Jonathan suggests on the Spin to place the L-foot (no weight) next to the R-foot & Spin yer guts out. Duck Out (level 3) [26-MAY-92] *D ======== From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: On 1, step forward, turning my R-H CCW, turning towards the Left, and start backing up into our joined hands. On And, finish turning (L) 180 degrees & start bending over. On 2, BACKUP beneath our joined hands. 3-And-4: Turn 360 degrees (L) while straightening up. On 3, Change hands (like UABBHC). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Pull the follower SLIGHTLY. Think about switching places! Duo Under Arm (level 3) ------------- From side-by-side, Leader on L-side (i.e., after an Arm Slide). 1-And-2: Pull hard & continuously. Both go under the arch starting on 1, leader turns R, follower turns L. 3-And-4: Rock-Step: to end in open position. Exchange places! Leader slightly goes under first! Elbow Tuck (level 3) ========== From dance position. Tuck-Step: On Tuck, turn the follower inward by using my L-H and grab the follower's L-elbow with my R-H. On Step, Spin the follower. 3-And-4: Follower finishes Spinning. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. On the preceding Rock-Step, take 2 small steps backwards & let go of the follower's R-H with my L-H. Fake Side Pass (level 3) ============== From open position. Lindy timing. 1-And-2: Start a Side Pass but on 2, lunge forward. Grab the follower with my R-H on her back. Don't let her get too far back. Grab her firmly and stop her momentum. 3-4: On 3, push the follower strongly back toward where she came from. 5-And-6: In place. Rock-Step. Fake Whip (level 3) *5 ========= From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip 3-4: as in Whip but don't let go with R-H! On 4, I should still be leaning backwards!!! 5-And-6: On 5, start SMOOTHLY easing the follower into dance position by 6. Ease the follower in instead of abruptly pulling her. Rock-Step. This is Whip-like Lindy To Dance. This is NOT a Fake Whip Slide without the Slide. Fake Whip Slide (level 3) =============== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip 3-4: On 3, as in Whip but hold on with R-H on follower's back; On 4, slide on my L-foot to my L-side (her R-side). Don't put foot between the follower's legs. On the slide, my R-foot should be straight. 5-And-6: On 5, continue sliding, On And-6, go LEFT-RIGHT & start pulling the follower into dance position. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. On the Sliding part, we should be practically side-by-side instead of facing. Fall Whip (level 4) [31-MAR-93] --------- From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower as in a Whip; move L-foot up, knee bent, next to the R-foot, and start leaning forward. On And, continue leaning forward. On 2 step forward on L-foot, placing ALL weight on LEFT-foot! My shoulders should be over my L-foot. (Lunge forward) Remain facing initial direction. Do not turn to face follower. 3-4: On 3, twist (CW) turning 360 degrees. Lead with the shoulders. Keep the shoulders over the same spot, weight balanced. Keep the chin up & spot straight ahead, do NOT look at the follower. Keep my upper axis in the same orientation. On 4, step in place. 5-And-6: triplet in place. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Practice alone with hands on shoulders (pigeon wings). My shoulders (upper body) should propel me around. On 2, fall so that my L-foot isn't too far in front of the R-foot. Flash The Hand Kicks (level 3) ==================== From dance position. Tuck(L)-Step(L), (on Tuck, keep distance & flash L-H) Heel(R)-Step(R), (on Step, push the follower away) Rock(L)-Step(R), (on Rock, put R-H on the follower's back.) finish Kick Steps. Grab the follower's back with my R-H and pull her in like Balboa for the Kick steps. This move can basically be done using only the R-H. Ends in dance position. Flip Follow (level 3) =========== From open position. 1-And-2: Pull the follower forward and sidestep to the left (and turn 180 degrees right). The follower should advance into the leader's starting position. If the follower advances any further, stay adjacent to her. At this point, we should be adjacent with joined arms parallel to the floor in a "V"-shape. 3-And-4: On 3, flick back with the L-wrist. Don't throw real hard -- use only the wrist. On And-4, move in towards the follower to catch her in dance position. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Flying Lindy [31-MAR-93] *D *E *F ------------ Leader's part: -------------- 1-And-2: Triple step moving forward with a little bounce and turning 180 degrees (to switch places); (similar to Lindy Hop "Face Off"); MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE SQUARED OFF BY 2! 3: Fall (leap) forward on R-foot, throwing L-foot backward. Strongly PULL the follower straight ahead by my R-side & IMMEDIATELY RELEASE MY R-H! Fall straight ahead. Do not turn towards the follower. At this point, we should be almost back-to-back. 4: Fall (turn to Face the follower & fall onto L-foot, throwing R-foot to the SIDE.); 5: Hop (L-foot) AGAIN; 6: Sweep (R-foot behind L-foot); Try to keep the R-toe trailing the ground. 7: Hop on R-foot while moving L-foot to center; And-8: Ball/Change. (L-foot should be behind me for the Ball/Change). Keep feet loose! Mantra: Triple-Step, Fall-Fall, Hop-Sweep, Kick-Ball/Change. HOLD ON WITH THE LEFT-HAND THROUGHOUT THIS MOVEMENT! ON 3, IMMEDIATELY LET GO WITH THE R-H! Switch places on the 1-And-2. On 7, be sure to HOP. Concentrate (on 7) on Kicking the R-foot BACKWARD & NOT tied up behind my L-foot! Think about 'run-run-run' for 1-And-2 (but keep to the beat of the music -- don't speed up). This is what keeps the momentum going when doing several in a row. After the first Fall (3), stay at THAT level! Jonathan does a And-7-And-8. On the first And, move L-foot back; On 7, Kick L-foot back; On the second And, Step on it; On 8, step on R-foot. Jonathan kicks L-foot backward on 7. After doing 2 or 3 Flying Lindys, getout by doing a "Step-Kick-Back- And-Around-Down-..." replacing the final triplet with the last 4 beats of a Flying Lindy. Remember to keep bouncing! A Flying Lindy can also be started from a Turn Rhythm. Follower's part: ---------------- 1-And-2: Triple step; 3: Fall (L); 4: Sweep R-foot behind L-foot, kicking the L-foot forward; 5: Kick L-foot forward (again); 6: Kick R-foot forward; 7: Kick R-foot forward (again); And-8: Ball/Change. (1&2; Fall (L); Kick (L); Kick (L); Kick (R); Kick (R); Ball/Change) Follower Foot Sweeps (level 4) [28-AUG-91] ==================== From dance position. 1-And-2: Slowly place the follower in front so that we are facing, allowing space between us. This should be done smoothly or else the follower will think it is a Tuck. 3-4: On 3, push the follower away (outward to her R) using both hands. Don't let go of either hand. On 4, pull her back in. THE LEADER'S FEET DO A TRIPLE-STEP as in a SYNCOPATED BASIC!!! Rock-Step: On Rock, push the follower away (as in On 3). Ends in dance position. Hip Bump ( / Spin) (level 4) *B ================== From open position. 1-And-2: Start turning hand Clockwise and downward. On 1-And, pivot on R-foot 180 degrees. On 2, step on L-foot (back to back with follower) while slightly bumping hips. 3-And-4: Triple step while turning back to face the follower. This can optionally be replaced with a 180 degree Spin (continuing to the R). Rock-Step: in place. ON 1, PULL THE FOLLOWER FORWARD while twisting the hand. Bring my hip to hers. Hold onto joined hands throughout the movement except when finishing with a Spin. The choreography practiced in class was: two Hip Bumps followed by a Hip Bump Spin. Hip Tuck (level 3) ======== From dance position. On the preceding Rock-Step, let go of the follower's R-H with my L-H. Tuck-Step: On Tuck, move the follower in front of me & stop her movement by using both hands on her waist. On Step, use both hands (push with L-H while pulling with R-H) to Spin the follower clockwise. 3-And-4: (Follower spins) Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Keep fingers of each hand close together. hands somewhat cupped. Don't jab thumbs into follower's hip region. On the "push" part, keep both hands parallel and move slightly (6 inches or so). Hip Tuck Duo Double (level 4) [26-FEB-92] ------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Do a Hip Tuck to the follower but... On 1, Touch. On 2, Spin the follower as I cross my L-foot in front of my R-foot. I DO NOT START TURNING! Just plant myself, don't step to the side, just cross the L-foot immediately next to the R-foot. 3-And-4: Leader pivots 360 degrees (no steps). Rock-Step. For the follower, this movement is exactly the same as a Hip Tuck. If doing a Single (instead of a Double), make it look cool. When turning, put weight of the L-heel & R-toe. Have weight equally balanced. Hip Tuck Reverse (level 4) *2 ================ From dance position. Tuck-Step: Hip tuck with 2 hands, do like a spin but trail both hands on the follower's waist. 3-And-4: On 4, spin the follower back the other direction. Rock-Step: Leader in place, follower is still turning. Then Single Step Basic, pulling the follower in close on 1. Ends in dancer position. Let R-hand trail the follower's waist throughout the entire movement so that she doesn't get away! Inside Double Outside Under Arm (level 4) *4 =============================== From open position. 1-And-2: Lightly and slowly pull the follower for an Under Arm & by 1 or And grab her L-elbow with my R-H. THINK ABOUT BRINGING HER R-ELBOW TO MY R-HAND. On 1, step slightly into the follower so that she can't do an Under Arm. This works good for fast music; On 2, push the follower back for a DOUBLE Under Arm. 3-And-4: Follower turns (double) Rock-Step. We both stay in our spots. Apparently there is a similar movement where we exchange places. If so, On the first triplet, I only turn 90 degrees. Place my hand directly over the follower's head when she is turning. Jack's Kicks (level 4) [29-JAN-92] *9 *B *D ------------ From side-by-side position, both dancers facing forward (& far apart). This can follow Savoy Kicks. A verbal cue is necessary because the follower needs to know to step on beat 8 in order to align herself so that we are on the same feet. Verbal cue. 1-2: On 1, Kick L-foot; On 2, Cross L-foot in front of R-foot. 3-4: On 3, Kick R-foot; On 4, Cross R-foot in front of L-foot. 5-6: Kick L-foot twice (out to the side). 7-8: Kick R-foot twice (out to the side). (change weight on 7) 1-2: "Scissor-Scissor". On 1, fall backward on R-foot, kicking the L-foot forward. On 2, fall forward on L-foot, kicking the R-foot backward. 3-4: On 3, (really) Cross R-foot in front of the L-foot & fall toward the LEFT ("Fall Off The Log"). On 4, continue turning & tap backwards with L-foot (quickly with no weight). 5-6: On 5, finish turning & Step on L-foot. On 6, kick with R-foot (forward) to the LEFT. At this point, we should be side-by-side pigeon-wing style. 7-8: On 7 (R-foot middle); On 8 (Kick R-foot back). Then 2 more 8-count basics: Leader stays hopping on L-foot throughout. On 2 & 6, R-foot is kicked forward to the LEFT; On 4 & 8, R-foot is kicked backward; On 1, 3, 5, & 7, R-foot is middle (knee bent); On 3, PREPARE TO TURN THE FOLLOWER BY LIFTING MY L-H. On 4, start a Double Under Arm to the follower. On the second time through, On 8 step on the R-foot. Then do a Rock-Step, pushing the follower backwards to force her to do a Rock-Step. Tap with LEFT-foot (on 4) before I turn (5) and kick (6). When doing the "Fall Off The Log", keep shoulder squared off, the movement should be done with the hips! On the last two basics, the leader has the option of kicking backwards instead of kicking forwards when the follower is turning. In the choreography learned in class, this is followed by a Tuck Spin. Jack Carey (sp?). Jive Step (level 4) [03-MAR-93] --------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. Kick-Step: Kick L-foot to the Left; Step with L-foot behind R-foot; Kick-Step: Kick R-foot to the Right; Step with R-foot behind L-foot; Step-Step: Step with L-foot behind R-foot; Step with R-foot behind L-foot; Repeat the above 3 times: 2 times with both hands held, then drop my R-H & do one. This lets the follower know that the movement will be ending. Getout: do an Underarm to the follower, exchanging places: 1-2: Kick-Kick. Hop on same foot twice 3-4: Kick-Jump. Land on both feet. 5-6: Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Always lean away from kicked foot. Hop on each beat. We should try to stay in place. Keep the kicks close to the ground. Think about hopping forward on the hopped foot. Romero. Jump Turn (level 4) *2 *3 *5 *7 *B *D ========= From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward to exchange places and place my R-H on top of & BEHIND the follower's L-shoulder. If this isn't done immediately, the follower will try to get her hand on my shoulder (as if an Under Arm To Dance). By And, our other hand-hold (my L-H, her R-H) should be similar to as in Toe-Heel-Cross. By 2, my R-arm should be fully extended BUT NOT LOCKED. Knees should be slightly bent. 3-And-4: On 3, jump (keep feet together) and spin the follower by pulling with my R-H (pull her sideways in place NOT towards me). Just raise my L-H and don't try to spin the follower with it. The lead is done with the R-H. THINK ABOUT JUMPING UP TO GET MY L-H OVER HER HEAD. On And-4, freeze (relaxed without tension). Rock-Step. We EXCHANGE PLACES on the 1-And-2. On 1, don't go too far & pass her. Take the entire first triplet to exchange places. Don't lean back as if I'm afraid of the follower. Look at the follower during the entire movement, especially on 1-And-2. THINK ABOUT TURNING THE FOLLOWER IN PLACE! Land on the balls (toes) of your feet. When done correctly, you shouldn't hear a thing. The lighter it is, the less stress there will be on your back. THERE IS NO PAUSE BEFORE THE JUMP!!! It should feel like one continuous movement for the follower. Kick Step (level 2) ========= From dance position. On the preceding Rock-Step, get hip-to-hip, close together (be glued together). Move the R-H from the follower's shoulder region to the small of her back. Push forward slightly & lean backward slightly. 1-And-2-And: On 1-And, Kick L-foot forward & step on it (middle); On 2-And, Kick R-foot forward & step on it (middle); On the second And, turn to face the follower with our bodies touching. 3-And-4-And: On 3-And, Kick L-foot forward (outside of follower) and step on it (middle); On 4-And, Kick R-foot forward (between follower's legs) & step on it (middle); Rock-Step: Use R-H to open up the follower to end in dance position. Keep kicks small, "as if flicking something disgusting off the tip of your foot" (a la Jonathan). Turn the follower inward using the R-H instead of pulling with the L-H. Don't look down at your feet! Have loose ankles and loose feet. Leader Competition Whip (level 2) ======================= From facing dancers, both hands joined. Follower moves around the leader as the leader stays in place. 1-And-2: On 1, pull follower forward with my R-H. Place my L-H on my R-hip & don't let go of her until 3; By 2 the follower should be by my L-side. 3-4: On 3, push the follower straight ahead. 5-And-6: (in place). Rock-Step. Ends in facing dancers, both hands joined. Keep my R-elbow bent. Hold on with my L-H by my R-side as long as possible. This keeps the follower in close and tight! Leader Under Arm Liquid (level 4) [26-FEB-92] ----------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Do a (full normal) Leader Under Arm but continue turning. 3-And-4: Keep turning & place my L-H in front of my face and onto my R-shoulder as in Liquid. 5-6: as in Liquid (continue going around in a circle). 1-And-2: as in Liquid. 3-And-4: as in Liquid. Rock-Step as in Liquid. Leader Wrap To Dance Position (level 4) [07-JUL-93] ----------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Leader Wrap but hold on with the L-H. *** incomplete *** Lindy 1 And 1/2 (level 4) --------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. 3-4: as in Lindy To Dance but travel almost 180 degrees on each step. 5-And-6: Finish turning the 540 degrees and drift apart from each other. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. This turns us both 540 degrees (1 & 1/2 circles). Lindy Basket (level 3) ------------ From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: As in basket. By 2, my weight should be forward. 3-4: On 3, push the follower forward with my R-forearm while stepping to the side on the R-foot. Continue holding on with both hands! On 4, cross L-foot in front of R-foot. Also pull back with the L-H & immediately let go (hang on with the R-H). 5-And-6: To face the follower Rock-Step. Start the lead by moving my L-H. Don't pull with the R-H, use only the L-H. Pull the follower into basket position, push her out, & pull her back. By doing this, the leader's action will follow by itself. Lindy Duo Behind The Back Hand Change (level 4) [13-MAY-92] ------------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy Hand Change. 3-4: On 3, as in Lindy Hand Change BUT don't grab the wrist!!! Grab the hand instead. On 4, For the follower, same as Lindy Hand Change. The Leader turns to the LEFT & changes hands. Keep the joined hands within the small of the follower's back. 5-And-6: Continue turning to end facing & change hands again. Rock-Step. Ends in R-H to R-H. Lindy Duo Double Hand Change (level 4) ---------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy Hand Change. 3-4: On 3, as in Lindy Hand Change. On 4, as in Lindy Hand Change BUT I simply point my L-foot to the Left (and step on it!!!) in front of the R-foot. Don't move my body, just my foot. 5-And-6: We both turn. Bring our joined hands behind my back. Rock-Step. Lindy Hand Change (Double) Under Arm (level 4) *2 *3 *9 ==================================== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy Single Hand Change. 3-4: as in Lindy Single Hand Change, but grab higher up on the follower's wrist, hang on, ... 5-And-6: Make the follower do an Under Arm. When going over her head, change the handhold to Palm-to-Palm. Rock-Step. Don't let the follower's hand rotate too much in my wrist until the joined hands are over her head. Then change the handhold. If the follower travels away, stay with her & keep the hands over her head. "Lindy In And Out Slide Leader Under Arm" (level 4) [11-NOV-92] ----------------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Do a "Face Off" but exchange places and place my R-H on the follower's L-hip. 3-4: On 3, push the follower backward with my R-H & slide my feet apart. On 4, pull the follower to my R-side & raise my L-H & hop (both feet) so that I am under the Under Arm (my L-H). 5-And-6: Triple step (start with R-foot) & complete the Under Arm. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. A 'Steve Mitchell' step. By 2, my R-H should be on the SIDE of the follower's hip (so that I can both push and pull on her). On 3, use BOTH hands to push the follower away. On 4, use the R-H ONLY to pull the follower foward. My L-H simply goes over my head. Lindy Shoulder Spin (level 4) =================== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance 3-4: as in Lindy To Dance but on 3, drop my R-elbow down. On 4, spin the follower's shoulder with my R-H. 5-And-6: Follower turns in place. Rock-Step. Variations: Turn Rhythm Shoulder Spin; Swing Out Shoulder Spin. Lindy Shoulder Spin To Triple Elbow (level 4) *G ----------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy Shoulder Spin; 3-4: as in Lindy Shoulder Spin; 5-And-6: as in Lindy Shoulder Spin but on 6, catch follower's R-arm with my L-hand (cupped -- don't use the thumb) on the follower's upper arm (between shoulder & elbow); 1-And-2: On 1, Spin the follower as I move slightly to the Right; On 2, catch the follower's L-arm with my R-arm; 1-And-2: On 1, Spin the follower as I move slightly to the Left; On 2, catch the follower's R-arm with my L-arm; 1-And-2: On 1, Spin the follower as I move slightly to the Right; Start trailing my R-arm on the follower; 1-And-2: Follower continues turning (twice) to end in dance position by 2; Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Lindy Single Hand Change (level 3) *2 ======================== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. Be sure to have a full extension in the R-arm (need distance). Our hand hold (my L-H, her R-H) should be such that I can rotate her hand. 3-4: On 3, pull the follower in close & tight, fold her hand behind her back (rotating her wrist inward). Make sure to pull her inward BEFORE folding her hand. Change (my) hands behind her back by grabbing her wrist. 5-And-6: In place (as follower spins). Rock-Step. Lindy To Dance (level 2) ============== From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward by just using the wrist. Stay in place and turn CW 180 degrees. 3-4: On 3 lean to the RIGHT, on 2 lean to the LEFT. Turn CW 90 degrees on each step. 5-And-6: Stop moving in a circle (stay in place) & pull the follower into dance position. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Keep R-elbow extended so follower can feel the "tilt" of 1-2.. Lindy Under Arm (level 3) =============== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance, but by 2, my L-H should be holding up the follower's R-H so that her upper arm is parallel to the floor. 3-4: On 3, I turn CW 90 degrees, cross R-foot in front of L-foot, pull the follower forward (with R-H), and drape the follower's hand in front of her face. The lead is done by pulling with the R-H. The L-H only drapes in front of the follower's face. On 4, straighten out my L-H such that is parallel to the floor. 5-And-6: in place. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Variations: Turn Rhythm Under Arm; Swing Out Under Arm. Lindy Under Arm Freeze (level 3) *7 ====================== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy Under Arm. 3-4: as in Lindy Under Arm but... The hand movement, which should be smooth and continuous, is much quicker than a normal Lindy Under Arm. On 4, just step back on L-foot, leaving the R-foot basically in place. I should be leaning back NOT FORWARD. It should feel like the Whip position (after the first triplet) but without holding on with the R-H. Make sure my L-elbow is near my side. Doing this will take up the slack between us & tell the follower to freeze. 5-And-6: On 5-And, freeze. On the freeze, there should be tension between us. Make my body completely still. On 6, Step on RIGHT-foot (bring it back next to the L-foot). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Keep counting (smoothly) to myself. Liquid (level 3) ====== From open position. 2 full 6-count basics (NOT Lindy timing). 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward, turn Left 90 to 180 degrees, placing the follower's R-H on the back of my neck. The follower must start running around me. On And-2, keep turning to make a tight circle. 3-And-4: Leader stays pretty much in place. Grab the follower when she gets there, and we finish the 2 basics (Turn-Rhythm style). On 3, cross R-foot in front! (& keep it out in front). 5-6: Continuing in circle ... 1-And-2: Continuing in circle ... 3-And-4: Leader stops moving, brings follower into dance position. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. After first triplet, I should have my weight low & centered since I have created lots of momentum. When we go around in circles, my RIGHT-foot should be pointing towards the center. Dance this movement like a (neck) WRAP! Don't pull with my R-H! Optional: To lead Lindy Timing, On 3-4, Lean RIGHT then LEFT. Liquid To Whirl Wind (level 4) [11-NOV-92] -------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Liquid; 3-4: On 3, keep the follower's momentum going in the same circular direction, pivot onto my R-foot so that it is between her legs as in Whirl Wind. On 4, as in Whirl Wind. 5-6: as in Whirl Wind; 7-8: as in Whirl Wind; 9-And-10: Stop turning & bring the follower into dance position. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Mooch Kicks (level 3) *7 =========== From dance position. (often following Kick Steps) 1-2: Kick-(L) Step (forward; PUSH THE FOLLOWER FORWARD); 1-2: Kick-(R) Step (forward; PUSH THE FOLLOWER FORWARD); 1-2: Sidekick(L) & Cross (the kick is to the L-side while body is leaning towards the R-side) (on Cross, keep L-toe still pointing LEFT). The leader should turn the follower inward (like a Tuck), but keep facing the same direction. (Our bodies are facing!) On 2, keep foot pointing forward and keep facing the same direction. 1-And-2: Leader face Left (follower face Right) & backup. Keep facing on this triplet. Rock-Step. On this maneuver, we travel forward & then back. Keep kicks small & don't try to move a large distance. We need space between us. The follower must feel a cue to move forward! Put more (bouncy) energy into this movement. Outside Under Arm Liquid (level 4) [30-JUN-93] ------------------------ From open position. On the preceding Rock-Step, on 8, lift my L-arm. 1-And-2: On 1, Step towards the follower in order to make the Under Arm easier. Make the follower do an Outside Under Arm IN PLACE! On 2, I turn 90 to 180 degrees to the LEFT as in Liquid. Place my knuckles on my neck. 3-And-4: Keep knees bent & stay in place. Turn towards the follower as my turning causes her to move around me. 5-6: Start moving the OTHER direction. Continue as in 6-Count Liquid. On the first triplet, the leader can either stay in place OR we can do 1/2 of an exchange places (after the first triplet we should be in tandem with the leader in front). Parallel Kicks (level 3) ============== From dance position. Firmly hold onto the follower & don't let her get away. Tuck(L)-Step(L); Heel(R)-Step(R); Heel(L)-Step(L); (repeat the above Heel-Step, alternating feet) ... To get out: after a LEFT-Heel, do a LEFT-step backward & release R-H from the follower's back, then RIGHT-Heel,Step, then Left-Right (Rock- Step). On the last 3 steps (R-Step, L, R), do an Under Arm To Dance Position. This move is usually followed by a basic. Note: Leader does HEELS, Follower does KICKS. Pin Wheel (level 3) ========= From facing dancers, both hands joined. (hands up, palms flat) 2 Toe-Heel-Cross; 3 Toe(L)-Step(L)-Heel(R)-Cross(R) in front of L (going in a circle); 2 Toe-Heel-Cross; Getout as with Toe-Heel-Cross by starting a basic, leaning toward the LEFT. Mantra: "Toe-Step-Heel-Cross". Pull Through, Dance Position (level 4) *7 ============================ From dance position. On Rock-Step of previous movement, do it in place (Step-Step). On Step(8), pull with my L-H. Then repeat the following as many times as desired... 1-And-2: Go around the spinning follower to get her in dance position by the end of 2. 3-And-4: Continue moving slightly in leader's momentum with the follower in dance position. On 3, Jonathan crosses R-foot behind L-foot (as in a Vine step). Rock-Step: If repeating, do it in place (Step-Step) & On Step(8), Pull with my L-H. Keep the pull low, between the follower's waist & shoulder. Trail my R-H on the follower's back to keep her in close. Push (level 2) ==== From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: On 1, Pull follower foward (Lean in towards follower). On 2, Stop her forward momentum. Keep elbows in close to the body, forearms parallel to the ground. Spread hands slightly apart when pulling in. 3-And-4: Push away from each other (push apart) Rock-Step. Leader stays in place. Pull follower forward, then push her back. Push Slide (with Follower Foot Sweeps) (level 3) -------------------------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. Do a Push with the following modifications: 1-And-2: On 2, step foward on L-foot & push the follower backward 3-And-4: On 3, slide R-foot up to L-foot. On And, slide feet apart laterally, On 4, slide feet together. Rock-Step: (optional) Replace Rock-Step with the triplet: Kick(L)-Step(L)-Step(R) Roll In With Under Arm (level 4) *2 ====================== From side-by-side position (leader on L-side). 1-And-2: Start a Cross Body Spin but hang on with R-H. On 1, cross L-foot in front of R-foot. *** Do a 90 degree turn on each of the 3 steps? *** 3-4: On 3, turn 90 degrees like a Throw Out & move L-H in front of her. On 4, lift hand to start turning her. 5-And-6: (Follower turns). Rock-Step: In place. Roll Out (level 2) ======== From dance position. 1-And-2: Push the follower (forward with R-H) while Pulling (inward with L-H) for the Under Arm. 3-And-4: in place Rock-Step. Keep L-H close to the top of the follower's head. Use both hands to guide the follower (don't forget to push with the R-H). Roll Out Reverse (level 3) *8 ================ From dance position. 1-And-2: as in Roll Out. By 2, my L-elbow should be next to my side. 3-And-4: I turn RIGHT 360 degrees, changing hands (from my L-H to my R-H) behind my back. Take 3 steps! On first step, throw R-foot behind L-foot (as in Balboa Throw Out). Rock-Step. Note: to practice doing the Reverse part, do a few Under Arm Reverses since this forces me to take the 3 steps on 3-And-4. Savoy Kicks (level 3 or 4) [13-NOV-91] *3 =========== Verbal cue. From side-by-side position. 1: Kick LEFT-foot forward 2: Step on LEFT-foot (middle) 3: Kick RIGHT-foot forward 4: Move RIGHT-foot to middle 5: Move RIGHT-foot to behind 6: Sweep RIGHT-foot behind LEFT foot, forcing the LEFT foot forward 7: Move LEFT-foot to middle 8: Move LEFT-foot behind (DON'T BOUNCE! -- "ugh!" a la Sylvia) Keep kicks small but sharply pronounced. The movement should mostly be done in the lower part of the body (as in Balboa). Bounce on each beat (except #8). Arms -- On 1: RIGHT-arm forward, On 3: LEFT-arm forward, 5: RIGHT-arm forward, On 7: LEFT-arm forward. NOTE: The arms are either FORWARD or MIDDLE (never BACK). Practice: On 5, turn slightly to the LEFT; On 8, turn slightly to the RIGHT. To get out: Do 4 Kick Steps in a Circle (4 * (Kick-Step)), continue moving hands. Then do 2 Kick Steps (close together) facing. Then Rock-Step (to end in dance position). Follower is using the opposite feet. Separated whatever (Macho Kick Turn?) (level 3) -------------------------------------- From open position. **** Is this the same as 'Side Pass Shoulder Drape'? **** **** This definition needs to be cleaned up **** This is similar to separated (syncopated) Under Arm or the first part of a Side Pass. 1-And-2: The same except I turn 90 to get in tandem. 3-And-4: On 3, kick R-foot to the side On And, start moving R-foot in front to cross it On 4, step on R-foot (in front of L-foot). The movement for 2-3 should be done slowly. At this point, I have placed the follower's hand on my LEFT-shoulder. Mantra: "Kick-cross-pause". 5-6: I do a pivot (L) with both feet still touching the ground and grab the follower in dance position. In this movement, there is NO ROCK-STEP for the LEADER! She He Fall (level 3) ----------- From open position. 1-And-2: Under Arm to the follower. 3-And-4: Spin on LEFT-foot 360 degrees & 1/4 more, falling forward on the RIGHT foot on 4. Rock-Step. She He Overturn --------------- Do a triple step on 3-And-4 instead of spinning. She He Fall With Slide ---------------------- Replace Rock-Step with Slide feet apart then together. Side Drag (level 4) *5 ========= From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Do a Shoulder Drape but turn 90 degrees to the RIGHT. 3-4: On 3, Lean to the RIGHT, and step on RIGHT-foot to the side. On 4, HOLD. 5-6: On 5, LEFT-foot cross in front. On 6, HOLD. 7-8: On 7, RIGHT-foot to the side. On 8, HOLD. 1-2: On 1, LEFT-foot cross in front. On 2, HOLD. 3-4: On 3, R-foot FORWARD to the side. Use the L-H to pull the follower backward. My L-H should let go & grab up higher on the shoulder. I should also turn to face the follower. On 4, pull with L-H, duck & go under the follower's arm & step forward on L-foot. 5-And-6: Keep moving in circle to face the follower & grab a hand. (On 5-And-6, the follower does a Step-Step while I do a Triple Step). Rock-Step. It might be easier to remember how many steps to take by counting 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 1-2 as 1 to 8. The first 1-And-2 can be a Cross Arm Under Arm (to exchange places). This was the original step. J & S simplified it since it was too difficult to initially teach it this way. We need to have body contact the whole time! There should be no space between our hip bones. When doing the "dragging" part, I sorta lunge as the follower leans upon me. Our knees are bent. Think about 'sneaking away'. Keep my upper body fairly upright & in the same orientation throughout the "dragging part". There should be a SMOOTH bouncy look (like a Sine Wave). Grab the follower on the HIP not the WAIST. Don't stick out my butt. Side Pass (level 1) ========= *** incomplete *** From open position. 1-And-2: 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Ends in 1/2 Side Pass Position. Side Pass Left Side Spin Return (level 3) =============================== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Side Pass. 3-And-4: Change hands behind my back, moving the follower to the L-side. Rock-Step: 1-And-2: Pull the follower forward so that we are parallel 3-And-4: On 3, flick my wrist back. Don't throw real hard -- just use my wrist. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Side Pass Shoulder Drape (level 4) [04-SEP-91] ------------------------ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Side Pass but after the Under Arm, start placing the follower's R-H on my LEFT-shoulder. This can be delayed to be done on the first 2/3 of the next triplet. 3-And-4: On 3, Kick to the Right & by 4 Cross in front of the L-foot & step on it. 5-6: Pivot 1/2 way to face the follower. This replaces the Rock-Step for the leader. Then do a basic in dance position. Side Pass Tuck [ / Double] Under Arm Return (level 3 or 4) ------------------------------------------- From open position. Do the first 1/2 of a Side Pass. Tuck-Step: On Tuck, I turn RIGHT 135 degrees to face the follower. 3-And-4: Pull the follower back with an Under Arm. I move towards (into) her position. Rock-Step. On the Tuck, the follower's forearm should be parallel to the ground. Don't rush the tuck portion of this movement. Don't try the Tuck DOUBLE Under Arm on a fast song. Side Pass With Cross Kicks (level 3) -------------------------- From open position. Do the first 1/2 of a Side Pass. On the second basic: Kick(L)-Cross(L): Kick forward & cross. The toe remains pointing forward. Kick(R)-Cross(R): Same as above (but with other foot) Rock-Step. For the follower, this move is exactly the same as a normal Side Pass. Slingshot (level 3 or 4) ========= From facing dancers, both hands joined. Keep both hands close together. Rock pull-1-2-pull-1-2-3-rock-step On Rock, step back & sideways (to the L) about 70 degrees. Step-Kick-Back-And-Around-Down (level 4) [31-MAR-93] *E *F ------------------------------ From open position. Mantra: 1-And-2, 3-4, Step-Kick, Back-And, Around-Down, Triple-step, Rock-Step. 1-And-2: As in Lindy To Dance; 3-4: As in Lindy To Dance but let go with the LEFT hand. Step-Kick: On Step, Step (middle) on R-foot; On Kick, Kick L-foot forward; Back-And: On Back, Kick L-foot backward; On And, Move L-foot up (knee up HIGH (thigh almost parallel to the ground), next to R-foot) (L-foot should be forward) Around-Down: On Around, do a Throw Out fo the follower, turning in place towards each other. On Down, Step on L-foot. Triple-Step Rock-Step. Ends in open position. If I want the follower to also turn, verbal cue 'Step Kick'. When the follower also turns, on 'Around', she will push off from me. This movement can also start from a Turn Rhythm. Stop Step (level 4) [15-JAN-92] *E ========= From dance position. 1-2: On 1, use R-H to push follower forward & both step forward together. Turn the follower to face & move forward a little; On 2, Hold; 3-4: On 3, Step (Use the R-H to turn the follower so that we are facing forward); On 4, Hold; 5-6: Step-Step; 7-8: On 7, Step; On 8, slide feet apart & KEEP WEIGHT EQUALLY BETWEEN THEM; 1-And-2: On 1, Hold; On And-2: RIGHT-Left. Move the R-foot to the middle THEN move the L-foot toe the middle (optionally crossing in front of the R-foot); 3-4: On 3, step back with R-foot; On 4, drag L-foot back, pointed ahead, keeping L-toe on the ground. 5-6: On 5, Hold On 6, stomp L-foot forward (no weight); Rock-Step. For beats 3 to 5 of the second half, keep my hips parallel to the follower's hips. Start this like a Tuck but hold on & don't let her move. My R-H should be behind the follower's hip (not on her back). Put more energy into this movement. Make sure that on the "quick-quick"s your feet are close together (swivel-swivel) so that our feet are close together so that they can slide apart. When dragging out this movement, immediately before I want to slide, on the last swivel step, bring the follower down as we make the step. Make it one movement. The slow & fast leading need to be very precise & strong. Super Slide (level 4) [31-MAR-93] *8 ----------- From open position. Mantra: 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance 3-4: as in Lindy To Dance Step-Kick-Back: On Step, step on R-foot; On Kick, kick L-foot forward; On Back, step on L-foot just a little behind R-foot. Weight should be on BOTH feet. And-Slide-2-3: On And, push the follower out (like a Throw Out) and slide my feet apart sideways; On Slide, slide my feet together such that the LEFT-foot is in front of the RIGHT-foot. The And-Slide should be one continuous movement: pull the R-foot backward while the L-foot goes forward then make it a circular movement as if on a lazy susan. At this point, the L-foot should be crossed in front of the R-foot. On 2, sidestep to the RIGHT with the RIGHT-foot (ONLY ON THE R-TOE!). Also, push the follower away. On 3, sideways sweep the L-foot under the R-foot to kick the R-foot to the Right. Also, change hands with the follower so that we are facing. This is like kicking the L-foot into the R-foot to make it kick to the Right. On 2-3, keep weight over the L-foot. Cross-Slide-Hold-Step-Step: as in Double Slide. On Cross, pivot on the L-heel (while stepping in front with the R-foot) so that the L-toe is pointed towards the Left! Be sure not to cross my feet for the final Step-Step. The Slide movements should blend into one continuous movement. This first part of this movement (1-And-2, 3-4) is done going around in a Circle! The remainder of the movement is not done in a Circle! This movement consists of a Lindy Basic followed by a normal basic. THERE IS NO ROCK-STEP FOR THIS MOVEMENT!!! Swing Out (level 3) ========= From dance position. 1-And-2: Leader folds in front of follower to get space between us. Slide my R-hand over and up behind her L-shoulder blade. There should be a full arm's distance between us. Don't pull the follower forward on the 1-And-2. The follower stays in place. 3-4: On 3, Step BACK on R-foot (turn 90 degrees R) & pull the follower forward. (then immediately release R-H). On 4, step in place (step in front of follower and extend my L-arm). 5-And-6: (in place) Rock-Step. Use the entire first triplet to get in front of the follower. Don't do it all on the first count! Keep my L-forearm parallel to the ground. Probably WHIP-like NOT LINDY-like. This is different from Lindy Hop. Swing Out Behind The Back Hand Change WITH STRANGE REVERSE (level 4) [08-JAN-92] ------------------------------------- From dance position. 1-And-2: As in Swing Out. 3-4: As in Lindy Hand Change BUT on 4, point my L-foot to the Left. 5-And-6: I turn to the LEFT & change hands (again) behind my back. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. See also Lindy Duo Behind The Back Hand Change and Lindy Duo Double Hand Change. Swing Out With Circular Slide (a la Whip Slide) (level 4) ----------------------------- From dance position. 1-And-2: As in Swing Out. 3-4: On 3 pull the follower but step forward on R-foot (to my L-side). On 4, slide feet from vertically apart to horizontally apart. 5-And-6: On 5, slide in a circular fashion (clockwise) to face the follower by using upper body to turn with. On And-6: L,R. Rock-Step. Swing Out With Slide Ending (a la Fake Whip Slide) (level 4) =========================== From dance position. 1-And-2: as in Swing Out. 3-4: as in Fake Whip Slide. 5-And-6: as in Fake Whip Slide. On 5, continue sliding. On And-6: Left-Right. Rock-Step. Keep the follower in close for the 'Slide'. When doing the Slide, leader's weight should initially be forward onto the L-foot, but should be transferred to the R-foot by the end of the slide. Throw Out (level 2) ========= From dance position. 1-And-2: Push the follower foward with R-H but keep holding with L-H. 3-And-4: In place Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Keep L-Arm downward. Throw Out Duo Turn (level 3) ------------------ *** Incomplete *** From dance position. 1-And-2: 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Throw Out Reverse (level 2) *2 ================= From dance position. 1-And-2: as in Throw Out. 3-And-4: I turn RIGHT 360 degrees, changing hands (from my L-H to my R-H) behind my back. Take 3 steps! On first step, throw R-foot behind L-foot as Spin (as in Balboa Throw Out). Rock-Step. Ends in R-H to R-H. A Cross Arm Lindy/Whip works great from the resulting handhold. As with all Reverses, never let go of the follower. Keep in contact! Throw Out Wrap (level 2) -------------- From dance position. 1-And-2: as in Throw Out. 3-And-4: Do a Wrap (turning to the LEFT). Rock-Step. Maybe I can remember that on all Wraps I turn on the SECOND triplet. (see also Walker Turn and Throw Out Reverse) Toe Heel Cross (level 2) ============== *** incomplete *** Toes always point towards the same direction. To get out (after an even number of Toe-Heel-Cross) start a basic by pulling the follower with both hands to my Left. Hands should stay between us and act as a "spacer". Don't watch your feet! Lean forward into each other; weight should primarily be on the balls, not on the heels of the feet. There should be resistance between us. Triple Elbow Catch (level 4) [29-JAN-92] *9 ------------------ From dance position. Tuck-Step: but push slowly so she doesn't Spin. 1-And-2: Follower spins but on 3 catch her R-arm (between elbow and shoulder) with my L-H (using a cupped hand). 1-And-2: On 1 spin the follower, On 3 catch her L-elbow. 1-And-2: On 1 spin the follower, On 3 catch her R-elbow. 1-And-2: On 1 spin the follower (to do 2 Spins). 1-And-2: Follower continues Spinning as I catch her in dance position. Rock-Step. ENDS IN DANCE POSITION. Leader can either alternate hands (as recommended by Sylvia), or keep using the same hand (R-H), catching alternating elbows. Trail my R-H on the follower's back. My hand should never leave the follower's back when doing this movement! Truckin' (level 3) *3 ======== From open position. Replace the Rock-Step of the previous movement with a L-foot slide backward and together. My feet stay on the ground. Repeat: 1-2: R-foot slide slightly backward and together, 3-4: L-foot slide slightly backward and together, To get out: do a (L) Rock Step while pushing follower backward with the L-H on the 'Rock'. LEADER IS THE PIVOT POINT. Keep my feet flat. All my movement should be from below the hips. Move L-H slightly outward on each slide backward. USE THE R-H TO SNAP FINGERS. "Tuck Back-to-Back" (level 4) ------------------- *** Incomplete *** From dance position. Tuck-Step: As I step, keep R-palm on her L-hip. 1-2-3: ...travel with the follower as necessary 1-2-3: On 1, shove her back & turn her. 1-2-3: Catch as in Flip Follow. Rock-Step. Tuck Double Under Arm (level 2) ===================== From dance position. Tuck-Step: 3-And-4: Rock-Step: Keep palm flat, turned downward, over the follower's head. Make the follower do the two Under Arms by leading with my hand. (i.e., "quick-quick") Tuck Spin (level 2) ========= From dance position. Tuck-Step: On Tuck, move the follower in front of me with flat of my R-H and keep my L-H rigid (don't pull her with it). On Step, spin the follower by pushing with L-H and flipping out with R-H. The movement of both hands should be slight (a few inches). 3-And-4: Follower spins. Rock-Step. Tuck Under Arm (level 2) ============== From facing dancers, both hands joined. Tuck-Step: On Step, pull with RIGHT-hand and put LEFT-hand over the follower's head. Don't crank with L-H. 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Turn Rhythm (level 2 or 3) =========== From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. 3-4: On 3, cross R-foot in front of L-foot. 5-And-6: Continue going around in a circle 7-8: (Rock-Step) keep going around in a circle. 1-And-2: Continue going around in a circle 3-4: Continue going around in a circle 5-And-6: Stop going around in a circle and bring the follower to my L-side. Rock-Step. Keep R-foot in front (crossed in front of L-foot), pointing toward the follower. Keep my L-H/her R-H parallel to the ground. Wrists should be at the same level as elbows. Turn Rhythm Fall (level 3) ================ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Turn Rhythm. 3-4: as in Turn Rhythm. 5-And-6: as in Turn Rhythm. 7-8: as in Turn Rhythm. 1-And-2: as in Turn Rhythm. 3-4: as in Turn Rhythm. 5-And-6: do a hold & pivot on R-foot, leaning toward the follower, keeping my shoulders parallel to her. Keep my L-knee in close towards my R-foot. Rock-Step: Fall forward (onto L-foot) and back. Next move can be an Elbow Tuck. Wait until beat 7 (Rock) to fall onto the L-foot. Fall directly in towards the follower so that we are closer together for the 'Rock-Step'. Turn Rhythm Inside Foot Slide (level 4) [19-AUG-92] ----------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Turn Rhythm; 3-4: as in Turn Rhythm; 5-6: Stay facing the same direction. (danced as 5-6 not 5-And-6) On 5, Slide RIGHT-foot forward (out to my L-side) as LEFT-foot slides backward. Use BOTH feet to do the Slide. On 6, slide feet back together. 7-8: Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. How about a Lindy Inside Foot Slide? Turn Rhythm Under Arm (level 4) ===================== From open position. Do a Turn Rhythm but finish like a Lindy Under Arm. On the 1st triplet of the last lindy timing, lift my L-arm. Two-Handed Boogie Circles To Spin End (level 3) ===================================== From facing dancers, both hands joined. On first triplet: Move my RIGHT-hand over my LEFT-hand as far as it will comfortably go. On following 1-2's (there can be several of these): On 1, Step on RIGHT-foot & push my RIGHT-hand forward (LEFT-hand backward). On 2, Step on LEFT-foot & push my LEFT-hand forward (RIGHT-hand backward). We should now be moving clockwise (slowly) in a circle. To get out (when facing a wall): On 1 of 1-2, release my RIGHT-hand & slightly push with the LEFT-hand. Don't throw real hard -- just a little push. Then, 1-2-3: The follower will spin as I do a 1-2-3 in place. Rock-Step: in place. Two-Handed Boogie Walks (level 2) ----------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-2-3: Move L-H forward to fully extend it by count 3. 1-2: 1-2: (repeat 1-2 as many times as desired) 1-2-3: Lead this by moving to the Right. Rock-Step. There is an option of moving around in a circle or not. Two-Handed Tuck Under Arm (level 2) ------------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. Tuck-Step: On step, push with the R-H (letting go) and place the L-H directly over the follower's head. 3-And-4: Follower turns. Rock-Step: In place. Under Arm Fall (level 3) -------------- From open position. 1-And-2: As with Syncopated Under Arm. I turn 90 degrees RIGHT. 3-And-4: On 3, Pivot on the L-foot (to the L) (push off with the R-foot); On And, continue pivoting & switch hands; On 4, fall forward on the R-foot. Do spotting here! Rock-Step. Ends in 1/2 Side Pass position. Under Arm Lindy Behind The Back Hand Change (level 4) [23-JUN-93] ------------------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Under Arm To Dance Position but we end facing. 3-4: as in Lindy (Behind The Back) Hand Change. 5-And-6: as in Lindy Hand Change. 7-8: Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Under Arm (Leader) Fall With Slide (level 4) [30-OCT-91] ---------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, Pull follower for an Under Arm. I only turn 90 degrees. On 2, my L-knee should be bent. Start spotting my ending facing direction. 3-And-4: On 3, start spin to the LEFT on LEFT-foot. On And (or on 4), change hands. On 4, Step on R-foot. I should now be facing my initial facing direction. 5-6: On 5, slide feet apart; On 6, slide feet together. Ends in 1/2 Side Pass position. There is no Rock-Step for the Leader. Under Arm Reverse (level 2) *8 ----------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Under arm. 3-And-4: Do a triplet, turning RIGHT 360 degrees. On 3, swing R-foot next to the L-foot; The L-knee should be bent when doing the turn. Rock-Step. Ends R-H to R-H. Practice doing this step since it forces me to take the three steps Under Arm Shoulder Drape To Dance Position (level 2) ========================================== From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Do an Under Arm, exchanging places. On 2, put L-H on follower's hip & place R-H over & behind my head. (keep R-elbow pointing out). 3-And-4: Push away with L-H, swoop R-H behind the follower's back to get in dance position. Rock-Step: in dance position. Keep shoulders parallel to the follower until Rock-Step. Under Arm Shoulder Drape Turning (level 4) [05-FEB-92] -------------------------------- This is a movement to get into Dance Position Pull Throughs. From cross arm position. 1-And-2: Under Arm Shoulder Drap to Dance Position. 3-And-4: Continue moving clockwise in a circle moving my R-foot behind my L-foot. Rock-Step: On Step, start a Pull Through. Under Arm To Skate Position (level 4) --------------------------- From 1/2 Side Pass position. 1-2: Start an Underarm but don't let go! 3-4: Put the follower's hand behind her back. Rock-Step. To get out, we could do a Tuck Double Under Arm. Up (level 4) [20-NOV-91] *8 -- Verbal Cue. From dance position. On the preceding Rock-Step, on Step go down. Also put my R-H around her waist. Think "Rock-Down". 1-And-2: On 1, lift (using my thighs) & start turning approximately 180 degrees (or however far we get) to the Left. Think about springing from a diving board. 3-And-4: Bounce (in place). Rock-Step. Keep my L-H solid so that the follower can push off on it. Keep the follower CLOSE to me. The follower should think Rock-Step-then knee sprint up (like a diving board). Up Whip (level 4) [31-MAR-93] *F ------- Verbal cue: Up Whip. From open position. 1-And-2-And: as in Lindy To Dance but by 2 we should both be down. By 2, leader should have turned a little more to the RIGHT than usual. Leader should have back straight. On And, do an Up; 3-4: On 3, finish the UP; Follower can use the L-arm to push off of the leader's shoulder. On 4, DOWN. 5-And-6: (keep dancing) Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Bend knees. Prep together! My R-H should be lower on the follower's back. Turn my L-H 1/4 to the Left to get it under the follower's hand. There should be plenty of tension (we should be one) to do this movement. Walker Turn (level 2) ----------- From dance position. 1-And-2: Throwout & turn to the RIGHT. 3-And-4: in place. Rock-Step. Turn RIGHT on first triplet. Keep elbows and hands into my side. (see also Throwout Wrap and Throwout Reverse). Whip (level 3) *1 *2 *3 *4 *5 *6 *7 *B ==== From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward (a strong pull using primarily the wrist). On And, start grabbing the follower's back (shoulder blade region) with flat of my R-H. Don't fully extend my R-H until beat 2! On 2, we have turned 180 degrees. 3-4: Slightly before 3, quickly turn my head 180 degreees (R). On 3, Twist the entire upper portion of the body toward the follower. Twist from the waist up, keeping shoulders parallel. Do not rise up. Step on my R-foot 90 degrees to the RIGHT so that my feet/shoulders are parallel. Release my R-H as soon as I step (on R-foot). On 4, step on L-foot. 5-And-6: in place! Don't lose balance or twist from side to side. Rock-Step. STAY RELAXED AND LOW!!! Before starting a Whip, make sure my L-elbow is bent, close into my side. This makes for less travelling distance for the follower. Keep weight low and balanced (knees bent). "Sit on it" Stay in place. Don't move forward on the 1-And-2. Turn upper body WITHOUT RISING UP. Don't fully extend my R-arm until count 2! I have a tendency to extend around count And! After 1-And-2, forget about the follower, relax, keep shoulders parallel & twist. Look first, then twist body. Take a wider step on count 3!!! Whip Outside Double Under Arm With Hand Change (level 4) ---------------------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip. 3-4: On 3, have my R-H and her L-H up, palm-to-palm. On 4, turn another 1/4. Use my R-H to start turning the follower. 5-And-6: Follower turns twice. Use the L-H to give the follower a little crank in order to get her to turn twice. Rock-Step. Ends in facing dancers. Leader can optionally turn 180 degrees to end in 1/2 Side Pass position. Whip Outside Under Arm Freeze (level 4) ----------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: As in Whip but by 2 have a palm-up flat handhold (my L-H, her R-H) with our forearms (primarily the follower's) parallel to the floor. 3-4: On 3, do the Outside Under Arm. Jonathan changes handhold with L-H here. Our handhold (my L-H, her R-H) should be flat palm-to-palm, fingers pointing up. The follower's FOREARM should be parallel to the floor. On 4, Pivot on RIGHT-foot while Stepping back on LEFT-foot & FREEZE. Use my R-H (NOT my L-H) to turn the follower. 5-And-6: On 5-And, hold. On 6, Step on RIGHT-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. The only way that the follower has a prayer is if the leader steps BACKWARDS on 4! Sylvia says to step back more! On the 'Freeze' version, do the Underarm faster & STEP BACKWARDS. On the Non-'Freeze' version, take a long time ('float') to do the Underarm & step in place (normal). You can technically drag the Hold out as long as you'd like. To get the follower to start dancing again, the leader animates & pulls & moves to his right. Whip Slide (level 4) [20-MAY-92] ---------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip. 3-4: On 3, PULL follower forward with R-H & let go of follower's back, stepping forward on R-foot (feet apart in slide position: R-foot in front of L-foot). Put my L-hand on my R-side (still holding the follower's hand). Weight should be evenly distributed between my two feet. On 4, Slide R-foot back & L-foot forward. 5-And-6: On 5, continue sliding in a circle to face the follower, both of us ending in our initial starting position; On And-6, Break step (Step on LEFT, then on RIGHT). Rock-Step. Keep holding my L-H (to her R-H) throughout this movement. Imagine yourself on a lazy susan & make the Slide be one movement. On the Sliding, don't raise my body up. Keep it at the same level. Whip Spin (level 4) [30-OCT-91] *6 --------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Whip 3-4: On 3, turn 1/4 as in Whip, rotate my L-H so that my thumb is pointing down, my palm is facing away from me, and my elbow is pointing away from us. Make sure her hand is parallel to her chest. DON'T ROTATE THE FOLLOWER'S HAND. Our joined hands should be at the follower's breast height. On 4, turn 1/4 as in Whip, Use my fingers ONLY to push the follower so that she spins. Don't push with the whole hand or it will cause her body to move backwards & she may loose her balance. The finger push is like a "Wave her good-bye". It should be a strong push. If I want the follower to turn twice, use my R-H to give her more spinning momentum. 5-And-6: as in Whip (as follower turns). Rock-Step. Think: ELBOW OUT, THUMB DOWN. Leave my L-H out there so she can grab a hold of it. Wiedell Whip (level 4) [06-NOV-91] *8 *9 *D ------------ From open position. 1-And-2: As in Whip but on 3 don't sit back as in Whip. Also, my feet should be parallel. 3-4: On 3, pull hard with my R-H, kicking my R-leg forward, bending my L-knee, and touching my R-side with my L-H (still joined to hers). Be sure to let go with the R-H! Really get down on the L-knee. On 4, turn 180 degrees to the RIGHT on my LEFT-foot by using the follower's momentum to turn from. Think about pulling the follower FORWARD (this will cause me to spin backwards). I need to kick my R-foot into my L-knee. (Pull & Let Go!) 5-And-6: On 5-And, continue turning on L-foot (Knee bent) with R-foot bent and adjacent to L-foot. On 6, step on the R-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. PULL ON BOTH 3 AND 4! Don't try to Spin too quickly. There is lots of time for a (Single) Spin. Bend the L-knee & stay down throughout the turn. DON'T RISE UP! As I turn, bring my R-arm up above the Left & across my stomach. When turning, do NOT have a "dead" L-arm. It should move with the rest of the body moves, without flopping on the side. Do NOT hop on the turn.
