LINDY HOP STEPS =============== INTRODUCTION ------------ These definitions are for the LEADER's part of LINDY HOP as taught by Jonathan & Sylvia. These definitions compiled by: Vic & Debbie Ceder P.O. Box 841 Los Olivos, CA. 93441-0841 www.ceder.net GENERAL DANCING TECHNIQUE AND HINTS ----------------------------------- For things such as Swing Out, my R-H is on her lower back, whereas in Lindy Swing, it is upon the upper back (shoulder blade). Use a "Rolling" bounce, not a staccato bounce. On the first lesson, we were told to get weight on our toes & smoothly bounce (in place) as if the bounce was centered in our chest, NOT our knees. DANCE POSITIONS --------------- The following are used as starting/ending positions for the dance steps: Dance position: Facing dancers: Jockey position: Side-by-Side, Leader on the Left. Leader's R-arm around the follower's waist such that the leader can lead with the whole body. Open position: R-H to R-H: Skate position: Tandem position: "opening sequence" ------------------ Done individually. Jonathan starts on beat 8, but it could also be started on beat 1. 4 * "back walks": Kick (L) Step Step (down low) 4 * "Boogie walks": Stand straight up, elbows chicken style) (Repeat the above) 4 * "back walks": Kick (L) Step Step (down low) 4 * "Shortie George": 1-And-2-And: 1-And: Right double-toe; 2: Left forward weight & lean And: Right forward weight & lean 3-4: 5-6: 7-8: (There is some finger pointing involved here) (Repeat the above) Shortie George -------------- 8-And-Uh-1: On 8, brush out with R-foot; On And, brush in with R-foot; On Uh, step on RIGHT foot; On 1, Step on L-foot, leaning Left. Feet should be very close together, knees bent. 2-3-4-5-6-7: Alternate stepping on feet (leaning towards current foot). The hand adjacent to the current foot should be pointing downward. 6-Count Swing Basic followed by a Break [10-OCT-91] --------------------------------------- From open position (after doing a Lindy Turn). Start a normal Swing Basic by moving my hand to the L. 1-2-3: as in Swing Basic; 1-2-3: as in Swing Basic; Rock-Step: as in Swing Basic; 7-And?-8: On 7, step on LEFT-foot & drop hands; On 8, start Backwalks by kicking the R-foot & clapping; The sequence is: 6-Count Swing Basic; Backwalks; Walk forward (Boogie Walks); Backwalks; Shortie George; On And-8: On And, step on R-foot; On 8, Touch with L-foot. Basket Ball Pass ("Crotch Grab") [05-AUG-92] *D *G -------------------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step 3-4: Tuck-Step On 4, send the follower to my LEFT & start turning to my LEFT. 5-And-6: Triple Step. Don't let go of the follower. Trail my R-H on her back. By 6, I should have her L-hip in my R-hand. By the end of this triple step, we should be back-to-back with the follower to my RIGHT-side. 7-8: Move follower laterally behind my back to switch her hips between my hands. Push the follower both on 7 and on 8! 1-2: I turn 180 degrees LEFT (CCW), follower turns 540 degrees. On 1, make the follower Spin by using my L-H. 3-4: Rock-Step 5-6: Tuck-Step 7-And-8: Triple step. Ends in open position. THERE ARE ONLY 2 TRIPLE STEPS IN THIS MOVEMENT!!! Pivot the palm of my R-H on the follower's hip (DON'T LET GO) and STOP HER (as in Hip Tuck Reverse). This lead must be strong! Get down LOW on 5-And-6, 7-8 of the first 8 counts. This gives me more control. Behind The Back Hand Change To Skate To Fall Off The Log [16-APR-92] *D -------------------------------------------------------- From open position. 1-2: as in Lindy Behind The Back Hand Change; 3-And-4: as in Lindy Behind The Back Hand Change; 5-6: as in Lindy Behind The Back Hand Change; 7-And-8: Leader backs up into the follower (she will sidestep to her Left) while turning to the LEFT. At the end of 8, the follower should be behind me to my Left (or Side by Side). We are in a "varsouvienne"-type position. Throughout the above 8 beats, hold on with my R-H! 1-2: Rock(L)-Step; 3-And-4: Triple step traveling (together) forward a little; 5-6: Feet go March-March. Take R-H over my head to turn the follower as in an Outside Turn BUT ONLY TURN HER 360 DEGREES. 7-8: March-March. We should now be in a "varsouveinne"-type position with the follower in front. On the above 8 beats, the leader doesn't turn more than 60 degrees. 1-2: On 1, Kick R-foot to the Right; On the Kick, turn slightly open (to the R) and fall backwards. On 2, Step (R) behind L-foot. 3-4: On 3, Step (L), turning 90 degrees. On 4, Step (R) in front of L-foot. 5-6: Mirror of 1-2; 7-8: Mirror of 3-4; The above 8 beats is done together (identical footwork). It consists of "backwards fall off the log"s. The leader must lead the turns with his hands. The follower's hands should be forward of her shoulders and in a curve-like formation. 1-2: Same as 1-2 of previous 8 counts; 3-4: Same as 1-2 of previous 8 counts; 5-6: On 5, Tuck (as in Swing); On 6, Step, spinning the follower by pulling with the R-H. REALLY FORCE HER TO GO WITH THE R-H! 7-And-8: Triple-step. On the Falls, stay upright and control the follower by using my elbow and arm. My elbow should be (bent) on the follower's back, not on her neck. Turn the body on the "Fall" Back -- thinking about turning almost 1/4 so that it's like we're falling backwards. By Pass ======= From R-H to R-H. Consists of 3 6-counts. (actually, two 6-counts & one 4 count & then THE ROCK-STEP OF THE NEXT MOVEMENT). DOES NOT START WITH A ROCK-STEP. I do three of the following: Left-kick, step ,Right-kick, step, Rock, step But stay in place on the third one. On all 3 6-counts, On first beat, I pull her towards me turning MY wrist CLOCKWISE (this turns her wrist CCW). On the first 2 6-counts we pass back-to-back to exchange places and re-grab (Right-to-Right) hands. This movement is similar to: 1-2: Single Reverse Split Swap 3-4: UN Single Split Swap 5-6: Rock-step & rejoin Right-hands. Ends in dance position. Charleston Switching Places [26-SEP-91] =========================== From facing dancers (doing Charleston). 1-2: as in Charleston; 3-4: On 3, as in Charleston; On 4, step forward, turning a teeny bit. 5-6: On 5, turn 90 degrees (back-to-back); On 6, continue turning; 7-8: On 7, complete the turning to exchange places; On 8, as in Charleston. Ends in facing dancers. This is a back-to-back exchange places while doing the Charleston. Exchange places, passing R-shoulders, turning to the LEFT. Circular Kick-Ball-Change *6 ------------------------- From basket position. (after Open Position To Basket). Note: NO ROCK-STEP! Actually, it is optional. 1-And-2: On 1, Kick (outside foot), turning the follower inwards by using both hands. I also turn inwards. Keep the Kick small so that we don't kick each other. On And-2: Step(L)-Step(R). My L-H should be out in front of us with resistance ("Cage") so we can push off of it like a wall. Do several of the above, moving counter-clockwise. (Keep track of eight counts: 1-And-2, 3-And-4, 5-And-6, 7-And-8, etc...) 5-6: On 5, Tuck, LIFTING MY L-ARM such that my upper arm is parallel to the floor; On 6, Step(R) & start turning the follower; 7-And-8: Follower continues turning. *** It seems to me that it would be better to push away from each other on the kick & towards each other on the Step-Step (as in Balboa Kicks In And Out!) *** Cross Arm To Tandem Charleston [26-SEP-91] ============================== From facing dancers (doing Charleston). 1-2: as in Charleston; 3-4: On 3, grab R-H to R-H On 4, turn the follower slightly. 5-6: On 5, Kick more to the side than ahead. On 6, as in Charleston; 7-8: as in (Tandem) Charleson; Ends in tandem position. I continue doing a Charleston as the follower turns in towards me as if she was doing a Charleston Switching Places. Cross Kicks (To Tandem Charleston) ---------------------------------- My part (all done with LEFT foot): (F=forward,M=middle,B=backward) F, M, B, M, F, M, F, M, B, M, F, M, B, M, B, M Then: "transition part" to get into Tandem Charleston 1: Left foot forward, 2: Left foot middle (no step) 3: Left step (On 3-4, I turn her under) 4: Right step (The above turning is still vaguely defined) 5-6: Rock, step (CHANGE MY HANDS!!!) 7: Right step ??? (On 7-8, I underarm her to my R to tandem position) 8: Hold (on right foot: LEFT FOOT MUST BE FREE) Facing Charleston ================= From facing dancers. Usually after a Tuck Double Under Arm Freeze. Do a Charleston. Frankie Skate [03-OCT-91] ------------- From tandem dancers, follower in front. 32 counts: 1: Jump on L-foot forward & to the Left; 2: Bounce on L-foot; 3: Bounce on L-foot; 4: Bounce on L-foot; 5: Jump on R-foot forward & to the Right; 6: Bounce on R-foot; 7: Bounce on R-foot; 8: Jump on L-foot forward & to the Left; 1: Jump on R-foot forward & to the Right; 2: Hold; 3-8: Bouncing on the R-foot, turn to the Right 360 degrees; 1-8: Same as first 8 counts; 1: Jump on R-foot forward & to the Right; 2: Hold; 3: Jump on L-foot forward & to the left; 4-6: Bouncing on the L-foot, turn to the Left 360 degrees; 7: Step on R-foot; 8: LEFT step then RIGHT step; The above is done as follows: 1: In Tandem, follower in front; 2: Exchange places; 3: In Tandem, leader in front; 4: Exchange places; After exchanging places, we are both still facing our initial direction. Also, move foward on the "Skating" portions. On this step, we should stay low & smooth as if we were skating. Minimize bouncing. Groucho ======= From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step; 3-4: On 3, Left STEP whoosh the follower 180 degrees to end in front of me with distance between us; On 4, hold (NO WEIGHT ON RIGHT FOOT) 5-6: On 5, RIGHT step forward (she goes backward); On 6, Left step forward (she goes backward) 7-And-8: I do a triple step (starting with Right foot) turning to my Left, to end by her L-side. Ends in dance position. Heels [09-APR-92] ----- From dance position. Do a Lindy Turn but replace Rock-Step (1-2) with: 1: lean back on both heels (but body leans forward), toes in air, legs are straight. 2: lean normal. Prepare on previous beat 8 by getting lower. "Hop Scotch" Break [09-APR-92] ------------------ From facing dancers (after a Lindy Outside U.A. Freeze). 1: Kick R-foot FORWARD or a little to the Left, in front of the L-foot (DO NOT KICK OUT TO THE SIDE!); 2: Step on both feet, spreading; 3: Kick L-foot BACK (kick yer butt!); 4: Kick L-foot forward; 5: Step on L-foot, kicking R-foot BACK; 6: Spread (as in 2); 7: Hop on L-foot (in place) turning to the Left; 8: Another hop (this time step on R-foot for Leaders, L-foot for followers). Ends in facing dancers. Then do a Lindy Turn. Jockey Position Charleston [02-APR-92] ========================== From dance position ("Jockey"). 8 counts. 1: Rock (L-foot) 2: Step (R-foot) 3: Kick (L-foot) forward 4: Step (L-foot) forward 5: Kick (R-foot) front 6: (R-foot) middle 7: (R-foot) back with toe on the ground (put weight on TOE) 8: Step (R-foot) backward (put weight on HEEL) Ends in dance position. 7-8 is a (R-foot) Toe-Heel. Relax the entire body. Don't step too far forward or backward! On 5, lean upper body forward & stay leaning forward until count 1 of the next basic. Beats 1 thru 4 have the body somewhat upright while beats 5 thru 8 have the body somewhat leaning forward. Kicks To Scoot [02-APR-92] ============== From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-4: On 3, face her & pull her in for a Kick (L); Step (L); Kick (R); Step (R) 5-6: Leaning my body to the Left, do two "scoots" to the Right. There is no forward kicking as in Swing. i.e., don't do the first two kicks of Swing. We can do any multiple of 2 "scoots" Lindy Turn ("Lindy Let Go") [02-APR-92] *6 =========================== From open position. 1-2: "Rock-Step"; 3-And-4: Face Off (turning only about 45 degrees). Make sure to meet her 1/2 way. She must also move! 5-6: 7-And-8: Ends in open position. Relax ... There is a variation that can be done: On 3-And-4, on 3 get in & Step (get connected) & Hold (freeze) for And-4. Either the leader or the follower can do this together or solo. It is important to get the "cage" feeling. Jonathan says don't worry about turning a full 360 degrees! 270 or so is fine. This is a circular kind of dance, not a slotted dance. Lindy Turn To Dance [02-APR-92] =================== From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: Face Off. 5-6: 7-And-8: Rock Step then Lindy to dance as in Lindy Swing but similar to the Lindy "Let Go" defined above. Open Position To Basket ======================= From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step 3-And-4: "Face Off" 5-6: On 5, drape my L-H in front of her face & start moving around her. Release my R-H & somewhat trail it on her L-arm to catch her hand. By 6, be behind her (basket style, grabbing both arms near her waist). This of this as similar to a Competition Whip. 7-And-8: Get to her L-side. Ends in basket position. Passing Kicks [23-APR-92] ============= From R-H to R-H. 1-2: Rock-Step. Tuck Double Under Arm Freeze [26-SEP-91] ---------------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step; 3-4: Tuck-Step; 5-6: Start a Double Under Arm; 7-8: On 7, freeze. Ends in open position. Lead the Under Arm quick & down. Lead first Under Arm with R-H, second with L-H. Down & Freeze on 7. Next step can be Facing Charleston. If so, it should be cued. Tuck In And Out Kicks *4 *5 ===================== From dance position. Rock-Step: Tuck-Step: On Step, pull the follower towards my L-side without letting go of either hand, also turn to face her. This is a normal Tuck. Don't try to start pushing her. DON'T LET GO WITH EITHER HAND!!! 5-6: Push strongly with my R-H in an arc while taking two marching steps, continuing in a circle. Make sure to push the follower strongly with my R-H & continue pushing her in a circle. 7-And-8: Open up to end almost back-to-back. Do this with a "spiking" motion. I can get more momentum by not staying in place but moving before doing the "spike". It's important to keep our joined hands bent from this point until the end of the movement. Don't straighten out our joined arms. Kick-STEP: Kick Away (L), STEP (L) turning to face; Kick-STEP: Kick inward (R) turning 90 degrees, STEP (R) turning to face. The hands do a "Patty-Cake". Kick-FLING: Kick Away (L), STEP (L) turning to face while FLINGing her. 1-2-3: Triple step, both of us turning 360 degrees to end in open position. Ends in open position. Turnstile / "Leg Up" -------------------- From open position. Same as Full Lindy Turn but ... 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: Face Off 5-6: On 5, R-leg is straight out, forward, up high (next to the follower's hip). Body should be curved in a "C"-shape but don't stick butt out. The shoulders and hips should be forward, the back (immediately above the waist) backwards. Don't lean back with the shoulders!!! On 5-6, turn 180 degrees. Try to have weight on ball of L-foot. We need space between us for better balancing. 7-And-8: Drift apart from each other, KEEP TURNING SLIGHTLY! On 7-And, I can either continue turning ("leg up") and then step (R) on 8 (this is done if it is a "good" one); or (if it is a "bad" one) on 7 start a Triple Step with the R-foot. Ends in open position. Under Arm Stop Reverse [23-APR-92] ---------------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: On 3, pull the follower for an Under Arm by leading my L-H in front of her face & then put the hand over the follower's head. The follower turns IN PLACE. 5-6: On 5, step on R-foot, lunging to the right; On 6, step on L-foot, lunging to the left. Also pull with the L-H as with a Frisbee Turn 7-And-8: We both spin in place. Ends in open position. Do not change places with each other. Stay nearby starting footspots. Can also end in R-H to R-H so that next move can be Passing Kicks or Side Drag. Windmill [03-OCT-91] -------- Verbal cue. From R-H to R-H. 1-2: Rock-Step. Push the follower backwards. 3-4: Grab the follower's L-H (with my L-H) underneath our R-Hs. On 3, Tuck (touch); On 4, starting turning the other direction; 5-6: Keep turning ... (Step-Step ... marching steps); 7-8: keep turning ... 1-2: keep turning ... 3-4: keep turning ... 5-6: On 5, keep turning; On 6, tap on L-foot (CENTER); 7-8: On 7, tap on L-foot BACKWARDS; On 8, hold. On the turning part, keep going under the arches & exchanging places. The hands move up & down in opposite SINE-waves. The next move can be a Frankie Skate.
