CAROLINA SHAG STEPS =================== GENERAL DANCING TECHNIQUE AND HINTS ----------------------------------- Small steps straight ahead with the feet, keep feet low to the ground. Carolina Shag is a slot-dance. Almost all movement should be done from below the waist. Keep steps small, change weight on each step. Charlie & Jackie played "Beach Music" for "Bubble-Gum Shag". Getin from dance position ------------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Step(L)-Touch(R). 3-And-4: Triple-Step. On 4, we can bump hips. Rock-Step. Then do like a Throw Out. Basic step ---------- When doing the basic (from open position) keep the joined hands still in the same spot. On the basics, move forward then backward, similar to an acordian. Basic #1 (Basic basic) [27-JUN-93] -------- 1-And-2: L forward, R together, L back. 3-And-4: R together (back), Step (in place), Step (in place) Rock-Step. Knees should move (bend) as in normal walking. Basic #2 (Kick-Ball-Change basic) -------- 1-And-2: Same as basic #1 3-And-4: Same as basic #1 5-And-6: Kick (L) Ball (L) Change (Step on R). Low & loose. Basic #3 (Crossover basic) -------- 1-And-2: Same as basic #1 3-And-4: R together (back), Cross L foot in front of R (feet close together) & step on L foot, Then (on 3) step on R-foot. Rock-Step. Basic #4 (Combination basic) -------- 1-And-2: Same as basic #1 3-And-4: Same as basic #3 5-And-6: Same as basic #2. Back Walk --------- Verbal cue. Replace the Rock-Step (after a Pivot or similar move) with both of us backing up: L-foot cross behind R-foot, then R-foot cross behind L-foot. (these crosses are real tight and small). Then, 1-2: On 1 L-foot cross behind R-foot, On 2 kick R-foot forward. 3-And-4: Cross R-foot behind L-foot, Step L on L-foot, Step forward on R-foot, 5-And-6-And: "tap-tap" (L forward in front of R) "tap-tap" (feet together) (the "tap-tap" is a "ball-change") Boogie Walks ------------ From open position. 1-And-2: Same as basic. 3-And-4: Same as basic but On 4 Kick R. 5-6: On 5, Knees lean Left; On 6 knees lean Right. Duo Throw Out Spin ------------------ From dance position. 1-And-2: Bring my L-H down & thru & immediately let go. 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Follower Under Arm [27-JUN-93] ------------------ From open position. 1-And-2: Take both triplets to do the Under Arm 3-And-4: Rock-Step. The lead is done only with the Elbow moving the entire remainder of the arm. Don't pull or raise the hand as in Swing. After pulling, start to look where the follower is headed. The hand goes behind the follower's neck & she will somewhat back under it. Kick Back [27-JUN-93] --------- From open position. The leader can do this by himself, or verbal cue the follower to also do it. 1-2: On 1, Step(L) forward (cross in front of R), On 2, Kick(R). The kick is low to the ground almost like a brush. Don't touch the floor. The Kick should be like bending your knee & slightly swinging your foot. 3-And-4: Back(R)-Together(L)-Forward(R). Change weight on each step. 5-And-6: Kick(L)-Ball-Change. Keep steps small! Kick Back Lean -------------- From open position. Same as Kick Back but ... 5-And-6-And: On 5, pivot on R-foot, keeping L-foot in the same orientation. On 6, fall onto L-foot, crossed in front of R-foot. On And, step on R-foot. Lean as if someone pushed you away & you immediately came back. Kick Back Toe Heel Cross ------------------------ Do a Kick Back, replace Rock Step with 2 * Toe-Heel-Cross 2 * Toe-Heel-TOE-HEEL-Cross 1 * Toe-Heel-Cross Then do a Kick Back (starting on the L-foot Cross). Leader Under Arm [27-JUN-93] ---------------- From open position. Starts like a Swing-style Wrap or Liquid! 1-And-2: Like the first part of a Lindy Swing WRAP On 1, Step(L). On And, Step(R) out of the slot. On 2, Step(L) backward into the slot. Move the follower's hand over my R-shoulder 3-And-4: Lift hand over my head, just over my dew. Rock-Step. Don't hold the hand tightly, roll it in the follower's palm. On the 1st Triplet, turn 90 degrees (or more). On the 2nd Triplet, turn the remaining 90 degrees (or less). Pivot [27-JUN-93] ----- From open position. Similar to "Lindy To Dance". 1-And-2: On 1, Step(L) forward; On And, Cross(R) behind; End close together, use the wrist handhold. Turn 180 degrees on the 1st Triplet. 3-4: Pivot 90 degrees on each count. 5-And-6: Lead the follower to my R-Side. Rock-Step: "Triple-Step, Walk-Walk, Triple-Step, Rock-Step" Leader turns a total of 360 degrees. Keep our joined hands (my L-H, her R-H) DOWN by the side as if we dropped our hands. Keep VERY relaxed. Take very tight small steps. Have shoulders and belt-buckles parallel. We should both be looking over our R-shoulder. Side Boogie ----------- *** Incomplete *** Starts like a Kick Back. Side Pass [27-JUN-93] --------- Optional return: On 1st Triple Step, grab the follower with my L-H on her back. On 2nd Triple Step, fold across her body, grab her with my R-H on her back. Rock-Step: to end in dance position. The next move can be like a Throw Out. For the follower, this option should feel the same as a normal return from Side Pass. Triple Basic [27-JUN-93] ------------ From open position. This consists of 3 6-count movements. On the 1st basic, do an Under Arm To Dance Position. On the 2nd basic, do like a Swing Roll Out but end side-by-side facing the opposite (180 degrees) direction. On the 3rd basic, do a Back-To-Back Turn (remain holding onto inside hands) to end facing. Facing direction changes 270 degrees. Walk Forward ------------ Verbal Cue. From open position. 1-2: Same as Kick Back. 1-2-3: Same as Kick Back. 1-2: On 1 walk forward crossing L in front of R, On 2 walk forward crossing R in front of L. (Take small steps, pivot slightly, keep feet pointing forward) 1-2: On 1 Touch (L foot forward), On 2 step back on L foot. 1-2-3: Triple step Rock-Step. Whip ---- 1-And-2: On 1, Left step forward, Right Cross BEHIND. 3-4: 5-And-6: 7-8: Rock Step. Try to turn 1 & 1/2. This movement is like a Lindy Let Go (not a Whip). Keep her in closer than normal Lindy To Dance. My L-H and her R-H should be down & kept in close to our bodies.
