Calling

ACA, the American Callers Association
BMI and ASCAP

Mac and his wife, Lou, were married for fifty-five years. They started square dancing in 1963, and Mac quickly became interested in calling. His passion for calling square dancing lasted for over sixty years. The couple also had great success in starting their own recordings and square dance records. In 1967, Lou-Mac Record label was created and later went on to create Mar-Let and Bob Cat Record. Some of the hit records have been "Last Thing on My Mind", "Gold Rush", "Blue Lady", "You Call Everybody Darling", "Somewhere My Love", "Last Farwell", "Cowboy Rides Away", "Think I Could Love You", and many more on the labels that they owned. Many achievements were met with their record companies including multiple Gold Records and becoming a producer for other well-known callers. In 1993, the label acquired new owners. Mac likes calling, but his love is teaching new dancers. One of the clubs alone had over 22 squares to graduate onto mainstream dancing. For over sixty years he has taught more than 4000 people to dance, called for 10 clubs - two of which he called for over 40 years. He has called in all 50 states as well as 19 foreign countries. In 1986, Mac, and national callers, Bob Fisk and Bill Volner created American Callers Association (ACA) with the concept of bringing square dancing back to a fundamental level making it enjoyable for all. One of the goals of American Callers is to promote fun and fellowship for all dancers throughout the activity. Mac believes reducing the number of calls that must be learned to become a square dancer will go far to promote square dancing and the joy and friendships that it should produce. ACA is also a licensing agent for ASCAP and BMI. Mac has served as Executive Director from its inception. The highlight of Mac's career is all the many places and friendships that he and Lou shared with so many of their square dance family. One example is on a trip to Japan, He and Lou were joined by two couples that lived in Japan that he taught to dance in Huntsville Alabama. In 2022, Mac was inducted into the Hall of Fame for the Alabama Square Dance Callers Association.
