SWING STEPS =========== INTRODUCTION ------------ These definitions are for the LEADER's part of LINDY SWING (mostly level MASTERS) as taught by Dennis & Denise. These defintions compiled by: Vic & Debbie Ceder P.O. Box 841 Los Olivos, CA. 93441 www.ceder.net DANCE POSITIONS --------------- The following are used as starting/ending positions for the dance steps: Cross arm position: (Rename to DOUBLE Cross Arm position?) Facing dancers, R-H to R-H and L-H to L-H with the LEFT-hands above the RIGHT-hands. Dance position: side-by-side dancers (leader on L-side), leader's R-H above follower's waist, follower's L-H on leader's R-shoulder. The remaining hands are joined, held out front. Facing dancers, both hands joined: Dancers are facing with hands joined (leader's L-H to follower's R-H and vice-versa). Open position: facing dancers with one hand joined (leader's L-H, follower's R-H) R-H to R-H: Same as open position, but RIGHT-hands are joined. Side-by-side position: (PARALLEL FACING OPEN?) Dancers are side-by-side (leader on L-side) with adjacent hands joined. (leader's R-H and follower's L-H). 1/2 Side Pass position: Leader is in front and to the LEFT of the follower. Leader's R-H is back, down by his R-side, holding onto the follower's R-H. Air-Borne Whip (level 4) [24-NOV-92] -------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Exchange places & both get down. By 2 we should be facing & posed. My L-H should be low & firm so that the follower can push off on it. *** incomplete *** Back-To-Back Turn (level 4) [29-SEP-92] ----------------- *** Same as J & S Duo Under Arm? *** From side-by-side position. (i.e, on the preceding Rock-Step, open up to be side-by-side.) 1-And-2: On 1, start pulling hard & continuously, go shoulder-to- shoulder. Lower my L-shoulder. On And-2, continue turning. 3-And-4: in place. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Dancers exchange places. Use a big sweeping motion of the arm. Leader slightly goes under first (turning CW). Dennis suggests bending knees when turning. Cross Arm Duck Out (level 4) [10-DEC-91] ------------------ From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: DON'T TURN THE FOLLOWER FOR AN UNDERARM! On 1, take a bit step, turn almost 180 degrees. On And, Step backwards on R-foot. 3-And-4: Rock-Step. Cross Arm Left Sidepass (level 2) [05-JAN-93] ----------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Do an Under Arm to the follow as in a Sidepass. 3-And-4: Move the follower behind my back to my Left-side so that we are as a Couple (or the follower is slightly behind the leader). Rock-Step. Leader remains facing the same direction throughout this movement. Next move can be a Flip Follow. Cross Arm Pull To Circle Reverse (level 4) [29-JUN-93] -------------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-And-2: Cross Arm Pull Through, but by 2 grab the follower's R-H with my L-H. 3-4: as in Turn Rhythm (but in OPEN POSITION). 5-And-6: as in Turn Rhythm (but in OPEN POSITION). 7-8: as in Turn Rhythm (but in OPEN POSITION). 1-And-2: as in Turn Rhythm (but in OPEN POSITION). 3-4: as in Turn Rhythm (but in OPEN POSITION). On 4 I should be solidly planted for the Reverse. 5-And-6: do a Leader Reverse (turn to the Right). 7-8: Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Note: this is in Lindy Timing (contrary to J&S). Keep momentum leaning away from each other. Joined arms should be tight. There should be tension between us. Square shoulders & body up to your partner's. Make sure the first 3-4 is in LINDY timing & NOT A TRIPLE STEP! Dip (level 4) [16-NOV-92] --- From dance position. 1-2: Lunge forward onto L-foot. Lean out with my Hip to the Left as my upper body leans to the Right. We should be close together in dance position. The follower's R-Knee should be locked onto my L-Knee. 3-4: Pivot 1/4 to the Left, bending the L-knee & hold onto the follower. 5-6: Untwist & raise up to get out of it. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Duo Flip Follow To Dance (level 4) [29-SEP-92] ------------------------ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Flip Follow. 3-And-4: On 3, flip the joined arm backwards, & we both turn inward 180 degrees. On And, turn another 180 degrees. On 4, turn another 180 degrees. Rock-Step: catch the follower in dance position. Keep pressure on the lead (1-And-2). Spot on EACH OTHER, not straight ahead. Make sure to turn 180 on each part of the 3-And-4 triplet, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST COUNT (3). Fake Lindy Slide (level 4) [06-OCT-92] ---------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance; 3-4: as in JS Fake Whip Slide; On 4, ball of R-foot on floor, heel pointed up. 5-And-6: On 6, Step on R-foot. Rock-Step to open up to end in dance position. Flip Follow (level 2) [05-JAN-93] ----------- From Side-By-side (or follower slightly behind), Leader on the Right. 1-And-2: Triple step moving forward to end as a Couple (or the follower slightly in front). 3-And-4: On 3, spin the follower; Shuffle around the follower (bend my knees) & get her in dance position. Rock-Step Ends in dance position, both dancers facing their initial opposite direction. Flying Lindy (level 4) [24-NOV-92] ------------ 1-And-2: Dennis says to stay in place on 1-And-2. 3-4: On 3, hop foward on R-foot, pulling follower forward. On 4, hop on L-foot, allowing R-foot to come up. 5-6: On 5, hop on L-foot again while swinging R-foot backward. On 6, hop on R-foot. 7-And -8: On 7, hop on R-foot while kicking L-foot forward; On And-8: Ball/Change. Lean back to be on balance so that I can start another Flying Lindy. Follower Foot Sweeps (level 4) [03-DEC-91] -------------------- D & D have both the Leader & the Follower turn 90 degrees on the first triplet instead of the Follower turning 180 degrees! Leader Competition Whip With Under Arm (level 4) [29-SEP-92] -------------------------------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: By 2, the follower should be behind me to my Left, and my R-H should be (in front) on my L-shoulder. 3-4: On 3, push the follower forward 5-And-6: On 5, start turning the follower. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Wait until the follower gets past me before starting to turn her! Dennis hints: On 1, give a strong pull & immediately relax (don't continue pulling with the R-H). She should be moving by herself. On And-2, start draping my R-H in FRONT OF MY FACE. (in front of my forehead, not over my head). *** Several aspects of this movement seem to be in contradiction to the movement as taught by Jonathan & Slyvia *** *** J & S seem to favor continually having the leader move the follower. I.e., Pull on 1-And-2; Push on 3-4. *** *** For J & S, the leader's hand position on 2 is directly over the leader's head, not on his L-shoulder! *** *** D & D want me to relax immediately after a SMALL but strong initial pull. J & S seem to want a continual pull. *** *** D & D expect the follower to move by herself around the leader. *** *** J & S tell the leader to place his R-H (with the follower's L-H) on the leader's R-waist so that the follower doesn't get too far behind. *** Lindy To Open Reverse (level 4) [26-NOV-91] --------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Open. 3-4: as in Lindy To Open. 5-And-6: On 5, swing the R-arm to the Right & swing the R-foot behind the L (almost moving 270 degrees). Try using a "BIG" sweep with the R-foot. Keep low on the L-foot. On And, change hands behind my back. On 6, finish spinning. Rock-Step. Lindy Under Arm Double Slide (level 4) [10-NOV-92] ---------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance; 3-4: as in Lindy Under Arm; 5-8: as in Double Slide (Cross Slide Hold-Step-Step). Change hands on 'Cross'. Ends in 1/2 Side Pass position. Note: on Step-Step, the first step is to put the L-foot behind, the second step is to put the R-foot in front. Lindy Under Arm Freeze (level 4) [12-NOV-91] ---------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. 3-4: as in Lindy Under Arm, but ... On 3, R-foot points at the follower; On 4, bring the L-foot around behind the R-foot (leave the R-foot in place). Also bring the hand down sharply & freeze. Think about moving my body down into the floor & freezing. Get down low. On the freeze, my L-foot has knee bent low, R-foot is fairly straight out to the side. 5-And-6: On 5, hold. On And, hold. On 6, step on R-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Liquid (level 4) [10-DEC-91] ------ D & D use an 8-count Liquid. Dennis holds on with the L-H for the first triplet so that the follower really wraps the neck. One-Handed Competition Whip Spin (level 4) [29-SEP-92] -------------------------------- From facing dancers, leader's LEFT-hand, follower's RIGHT-hand. 1-And-2: Pull the follower straight ahead. Hold on with the R-H for this entire triplet. 3-4: On 3, pull the follower backwards (using my R-H). Note that on 3, neither one of us changes our facing direction. Don't try to start turning her on 3! On 4, turn the follower 180 degrees. 5-And-6: On 5, spin the follower using my RH. Get my L-H ready to catch her (in open position). Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Dennis suggests that the leader stays low on 2,3-4,5-And-6. This will make it smoother for the follower. i.e., don't stand straight up on 3!!! Pushes w/Styling (level 4) [29-JUN-93] ---------------- From facing dancers, both hands joined. 1-And-2: as in Push (On 1, pull follower forward; On 2, stop her momentum, pushing her backward a little), but turn 1/4 to the right (by rotating my shoulders). 3-And-4: Push the follower backwards On 3-And, Slide R-foot back towards the L-foot. On 4, Step on R-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Reverse Slide With Follower Spin (level 4) [10-NOV-92] -------------------------------- Same as J&S Cross Arm Back-To-Back Tuck BUT Spin the follower on 3 NOT 2. Follower takes a Triple Step for 1-And-2 instead of a Tuck-Step. Roll In Return To Open (level 4) [26-NOV-91] ---------------------- From 1/2 Side Pass position (with Leader's R-H directly out to the side, not behind). 1-And-2: Pull the follower foward then in a circle. On 1, move my R-H forward; On And-2, move it in a small CCW circle (with my hand staying the same distance from the floor). 3-And-4: Raise my R-H to do another Under Arm to the Follower. Rock-Step. Pull foward then CCW circle then up & over for the Under Arm. Let the follower's hand rotate in mine. Ends in open position. Side Pass With Leader Kick Steps (level 4) [26-NOV-91] -------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Side Pass but leader replaces the triplet with Kick (L) Step (L); 3-And-4: as in Side Pass but leader replaces the triplet with Kick (R) Step (R); Rock-Step. Ends in 1/2 Side Pass position. Next step in sequenced choreography was Roll In Return To Open. Side Pass With Tuck Under Arm Return (level 2) [19-JAN-93] ------------------------------------ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Sidepass (Under Arm to Follower, changing hands); 3-And-4: as in Sidepass; Rock-Step: On Rock, step backwards; On Step, step backwards to the Right & turn somewhat toward the follower. Tuck-Step: 3-And-4: Under Arm to the Follower; Rock-Step: in place. Ends in open position. Straight Arm Turn (level 4) [27-OCT-92] ----------------- From open position. 1-And-2: On 1, pull the follower forward & start putting my R-H over the follower's L-shoulder s.t. my forearm is resting on top of her shoulder. Do like an Outside Underarm. 3-And-4: On 3, change hands. Do another underarm to the follower for this triplet. Rock-Step: in place Ends R-H to R-H. This is very similar to an Apache! On 1-And-2, try to keep my L-arm straight. Under Arm Lindy Double Outside Turn (level 4) [10-NOV-92] ----------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: as in Under Arm Lindy To Dance; 3-4: as in J& S Whip Outside Double Under Arm; 5-And-6: Follower continues turning; Rock-Step. Ends in open position. Under Arm Lindy To Dance (level 4) [28-OCT-92] ------------------------ From open position. 1-And-2: Do a Follower Under Arm but LEADER STAYS IN PLACE & by 2 has his R-H on the follower's back as in Lindy To Dance. 3-4: as in Lindy To Dance. 5-And-6: as in Lindy To Dance. Rock-Step. Ends in dance position. Stay in Place; On the first triplet, do the Under Arm much quicker than usual; Don't let go of the L-H. For the follower, this feels like a Cross Arm Lindy To Dance. Dennis suggests that prior to this step, the leader get down low as in a normal Lindy To Dance. Under Arm Reverse (level 2) [05-JAN-93] ----------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Do an Under Arm to the follower but on 2, have the L-arm down & R-arm in front of my chest & L-knee bent. 3-And-4: Leader turns RIGHT 360 degrees & changes hands behind his back. Be sure to take the 3 steps. Rock-Step Ends in R-H to R-H with backwards handhold. Under Arm Wrap To Sidepass Position ----------------------------------- From open position. 1-And-2: Do a Follower Under Arm. 3-And-4: Leader turns LEFT 360 degrees & changes hands to end in Sidepass position. Rock-Step. Ends in 1/2 Sidepass position. Wiedell Whip (level 4) [26-NOV-91] ------------ From open position. 1-And-2: as in Lindy To Dance. 3-4: On 3, Kick R-foot forward & then immediately bring it back up to my L-knee before 4 & start spinning (CW). On 4, continue spinning. 5-And-6: On 5-And, continue spinning. Don't hold on with my hand too long or it will slow my Spin. On 6, step on R-foot. Rock-Step. Ends in open position.
