LINDY HOP STEPS =============== INTRODUCTION ------------ These definitions are for the LEADER's part of LINDY HOP as taught by Dennis & Denise. These definitions compiled by: Vic & Debbie Ceder P.O. Box 841 Los Olivos, CA. 93441 www.ceder.net GENERAL DANCING TECHNIQUE AND HINTS ----------------------------------- Lindy Hop: ---------- Get a bouncing rhythm in the knees. Keep arms bent. Loosen up! Leader should generally be low, follower should be upright. DANCE POSITIONS --------------- The following are used as starting positions for the dance steps: Dance position: side-by-side dancers (leader on Left-side), leader's R-H above follower's waist, follower's L-H on leader's R shoulder. The remaining hands are held out front. Open position: facing dancers with one hand joined (leader's L-H, follower's R-H) R-H to R-H: Same as open position, but Right-Hands are joined. Tandem position: Leader behind follower; Leader's hands outside the follower's, grabbing her hands or her wrists; Bodies close together & chrouched down low. Private lessons --------------- *1: *2: *3: 24-AUG-91 *4: 14-SEP-91 *5: 12-OCT-91 *6: 16-NOV-91 *7: 14-DEC-91 5 Count Break *1 *2 ------------- From open position. This is a 6-count step. 1-2: Rock-Step 3-And-4: "Face Off" 5-6: On 5, spin (on L-foot) approximately 180 degrees (from initial starting direction) and step FORWARD onto R-foot. Think about throwing my L-arm straight ahead. At this point, my weight should be low & forward. The follower should be slightly behind me. On 6, pause. Think about taking my weight & moving it around her. On the Rock-Step (for the next step), push the follower backwards with the L-H. Apache [11-AUG-92] ------ From open position. 1-2: as in Lindy To Dance 3-And-4: Face Off (Try not to pass each other. Be side by side, bodies 45 degrees from starting position). My R-H should be on the follower's lower back. 5-6: On 5, (turn to 180 degree position) step behind with R-foot and change hands behind follower's back. On 6, Step to the side & start unwinding the follower. 7-And-8: Turn the remaining 90 degrees. Ends R-H to R-H. On 1-2 of the next movement, think about pushing the follower back on 1 (move R-H to the Left and back on 1, move it forward & to the right on 2). Apache To Reverse Promenade [02-FEB-93] --------------------------- From open position. Similar to J&S Behind The Back Hand Change but hold on with the R-H and keep it low such that it ends behind my back. KEEP BOTH HANDS LOW! Next step can be Skip Step And Reverse. Apache With Underarm To Tandem [25-AUG-92] ------------------------------ From open position. 1-2: as in Apache. 3-And-4: as in Apache. 5-6: as in Apache. 7-And-8: as in Apache but turn the follower an extra 1/2 (& grab both hands) Ends in tandem position. Around The World Charleston [12-JAN-93] --------------------------- From facing dancers (after a Break in which the leader goes RIGHT-Left). 1-2: On 1, hop on L-foot, moving the R-knee upward to the L-side; On 2, hop again on L-foot; 3-4: On 3, skate to the RIGHT on the R-foot. (On all but the very first time, turn 1/4 to the RIGHT); On 4, hop again on R-foot; 5-6: On 5, step on L-foot behind R-foot; On 6, step on R-foot; 7-8: On 7, turn 1/4 Right & kick L-foot; On 8, step on L-foot; Do 4 sets of 8 counts to complete a box. Mantra: "Sweep And Skate And Back Slide Kick Step" (1 word per beat). Turn 1/4 Right on 3 and on 7. Continue skipping throughout this movement. To getout at the end: On 7, kick L-foot BUT DON'T TURN; On And-8, Break. Big Apple Break *1 *2 --------------- From R-H to R-H. 10-counts. Rock-Step: Push the follower backwards to get space between us. 1-2: On 1, leap forward onto L-foot while swinging my R-arm backwards to bring the follower forward. My R-foot is extended backwards. My R-Arm is almost straight, not bent. On 2, Step on the R-foot behind the L-foot to kick the L-foot out front. 3-And-4: On 3, L-foot is lifted higher. On And, Jump upwards. Throw up our joined arms to get height on the jump! This is done by swinging my arms in an arc forward & up. On 4, land on R-foot. *** Do I quickly step on the L-foot before stepping on the R-foot? *** 5-6: On 5, Lunge forward on L-foot On 6, Touch backwards with R-foot WITHOUT CHANGING WEIGHT. 7-And-8: On 7, Hold & shift weight to R-foot. On And, Hop BACKWARDS on L-foot. (start changing hands!) On 8, Step on R-foot. On 1 & 5 pull follower forward. Switch to normal hands between 8 and 1st count of next step. Keep elbow down. Charleston Parallel Turns ------------------------- From tandem position. Part A ------ 1-2: as in Tandem Charleston. 3-4: Lead only with the L-H, keep R-H back. On 3, pull my L-H to my RIGHT-waist (i.e., place the follower's L-H on my R-waist) & turn 90 degrees LEFT. Don't move R-H forward!!! On 4, change hands (but don't turn). 5-6: Turn another 1/4. Turn on 4 or 5-ish. 7-8: as in Tandem Charleston but with the Leader in front. Part B (LEADER starts out in front) ------ 1-2: as in Tandem Charleston. 3-4: On 3 skip forward & put my R-H behind my back to change hands. 5-6: *** Turn on 5 or on 6 ??? *** 7-8: as in Tandem Charleston. Hop during the turning. On each of the above two parts, we turn 180 degrees. Cover The Hole [25-AUG-92] -------------- From facing dancers. Must be cued? 1: Touch L-foot to the L-side. 2(-And): On 2, Clap hands. (feet don't move) On And, move L-foot back to center & step on it. 3: Touch R-foot to the R-side. 4(-And): On 4, Clap hands. On And, move R-foot back to center & step on it. 5: Touch L-foot to the L-side. 6(-And): On 6, Clap hands. On And, move L-foot back to center & step on it. 7-And-8: On 7, Hold. On And-8, Break Step (L-R). Ends in open position. The follower mirrors the leader on this step. Think of doing a Clap then change feet; Repeat. Clap on beats 2, 4, and 6. Note: LEFT-foot first! Cross Arm Pull To Promenade (to get into Da Da Da Da's) [11-AUG-92] --------------------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-4: Draw the follower into a one-handed basket by pulling her forward & twisting to get our joined hands behind her back. Then keep my hand flat behind her back (or on her R-hip). The 3-4 (for the leader) is a cheat step. Simply bounce as if doing a triple step. 5-6: Rock(LEFT)-Step. We should now be connected, very close together (as in Jockey position). My R-H should hold her R-H on her RIGHT-hip instead of behind her back. Our LEFT hands should be joined in FRONT of us. 7-8: Kick(L)-Step. Then do a few Da Da Da Da's. Da Da Da Da [11-AUG-92] ----------- Following a 'Cross Arm Pull To Promenade'. The 'Da-Da-Da-Da' is syncopated like Quick-Quick-Pause-Quick-Slow? 1-2: Kick(R)-Step; 3-4: Kick(L)-Step; 5-6: On 5 do a Da-Da (fall forward on R-foot, kicking L-foot back, then fall forward on L-foot, kicking R-foot back). On 6ish, pause 7-8: On 7ish, pause? or on 7-8 do a Da-Da. The above movement may be repeated several times. Keep the body upright during the Kick Steps, Keep the body downwards during the Da-Da's. Kick Step Ending with Follower Tuck Spin ---------------------------------------- 1-2: On 1, LET GO OF THE L-H and Step BACK (but not too far) on R-foot; On 2, Step L-foot next to the R-foot. Roll Out the follower. 3-4: On 3, Kick R-foot to the LEFT; On 4, Step on R-foot far to the RIGHT-side & backwards of the L-foot. 5-6: On 5, Tuck (turn 90 degrees Right), switching her R-H from my R-H to my L-H! At this point, we should be in a Side Pass Left Side Return position (our forearms should be parallel to the ground). On 6, Step (a long slide with the L-foot into the follower's position) and Flip the follower with my L-H (& let go). The toe of my L-foot should be pointing at the follower. 7-8: On 7, Skip on the L-foot (to the R) with the R-foot high in the air. On 8, place R-foot next to the L-foot. Ends in open position. On 1 thru 4, Remain facing in the same direction. Dance Position Grouchos w/Peckin' *4 --------------------------------- From dance position. Rock-Step. 3-4: On 3, pull her in STOMACH-TO-STOMACH by throwing her around with my R-H. On 4, hold. 5-6: Walk (R) - Walk (L) 7-8: Walk (R) - Walk (L) 1-2-3: Triple step, Leader only turning 180 degrees to the Left to end in dance position. There can be any (even) number of 'Walk's. On the "Walk - Walk" portion, the leader can "chicken peck" at the follower. This is done by looking straight ahead, keeping the rest of the body still, & moving the head forward & back. When doing the walk, the leader should be really low, shoulders back, chest out, knees bent. The follower should be upright. Dance Position Suzie Q's *1 *2 *4 ------------------------ From dance position. VERBAL CUE: "Suzie-Q". 1-2: ROCK-STEP. Stand up & get space between us. 1-2,3-4: On 1, Kick (L) to the L, pointed low, relaxed & loose. When kicking, lean away from the kicked foot! The kick should be first with a knee up & then snap it out. On 2, Crossover (L), step FLAT-FOOTED pointing to the Right while pivoting 90 degrees on the R-foot to the Right. Make sure to bend the knees! ALSO BE SURE TO CHANGE WEIGHT TO THE FORWARD FOOT!!! On 3, Pivot Left 90 degrees (L-heel & R-toe); On 4, Cross; 5-6,7-8: On 5, Kick (R) to the R On 6, Crossover (R) On 7, Pivot On 8, Cross 1-2,3-4: On 1, Kick (L) to the L On 2, Crossover (L) On 3, Pivot On 4, Cross 1-2-3: Triple step shuffling sideways to my Right. Our bodies should be parallel to each other. KEEP KNEES BENT! Knees should be almost touching each other. It is possible to do this movement with the knees locked together. Our bodies should be low throughout this movement. On the kick, we should be leaning away from the kicked foot. Duck Out [10-APR-92] -------- Verbal cue: 'Duck' From tandem position. 1-2: As in Tandem Charleston; 3-4: On 3, step forward on L-foot, turning a little (point the toe towards 10 o'clock. On 4, turn to the Left with the R-leg (straight-legged) over the follower's back. Let go of hands at approx. 4. Let go when my leg forces me to. 5-6: I keep turning slowly with the leg up. 7-And-8: On 7, Hold. On And-8, Break step (L,R). Ends in open position. Frankie Manning Skate [26-JAN-93] --------------------- From tandem position. Verbal cue? 1: Ice Skate to the LEFT (LARGE movement); 2,3,4: Hop on the L-foot (3 times); 5: Ice Skate to the RIGHT (LARGE movement); 6,7: Hop on the R-foot (2 times); 8: Ice Skate to the LEFT (SMALL movement); 1: Ice Skate to the RIGHT (SMALL movement); 2: HOLD (weight on R-foot); 3,4,5: On 3 start turning AS A COUPLE to the RIGHT. Turn the follower by moving my hands. On 4,5, continue turning. REALLY TURN THE FOLLOWER TO THE RIGHT ON 3-4-5! 6: Start to change hands behind my back (pass her R-H from my R-H to my L-H then to my R-H) & start to turn so that the leader is in front. 7,8: Keep turning to put the leader in front. 8-1 is like a Rock-Step but rock body from Left to Right. On 3-8 (part 2), we both hop on R-foot, turning to the RIGHT. Leader turns 1 & 1/2. Repeat first 8 counts with leader in front. Next 8 counts: 1: (or 8 of preceding 8 counts) Change hands (move my R-H behind my back) so that I get to the Left-side of a Couple. 2: HOLD. 3 to 7: Hop on the R-foot, leader turning Right 1 & 1/2, follower turning Right twice, so that we are facing. And-8: Break Step (L-R) Frog, Shoot, Skip Around To Tandem [26-JAN-93] ---------------------------------- From facing dancers. On And of 8-And of preceding movement, Jump forward. Don't get so much elevation but try to go foward; On 1, Land on both feet, arms forward & apart. We both jump forward to the Left; On 2, Hold; On 3, Kick R-foot to the Left & stay down low (frog level); On 4, Hold; 5-6-7: R-L-R, turning to the Right IN PLACE; 8: Hop on R-foot; Ends in tandem dancers, leader behind follower. Both dancers are on the same feet throughout this movement. Next step was Frankie Manning Skate. Full Lindy Turn *1 *2 *5 *6 --------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step DON'T MOVE BACKWARDS ON THE ROCK! Just kinda get lower in place. Don't pull the at all on the follower! Try just bouncing twice on the R-foot. Keep weight forward! Lean body at approx. 110 degrees towards the follower. Lean forward at the waist. On 1, L-foot FAR back, but shoulders should be straight up. I should feel it in my back. 3-And-4: "Face Off" (don't turn more than 90 degrees) On 3, Slide towards her, L-foot out in front curved inward to point at her. This first step is a BIG slide. On And-4, Slightly in place. Keep weight back, L-foot is forward of R-foot. 5-6: On 5, pivot on R-foot (step only on the ball of the foot) immediately behind L-foot (feet close together, balance over both feet, don't lean backward) while turning the follower 90 to 180 degrees. This is a large spin. KEEP SHOULDERS PARALLEL TO HERS and MOVE 'EM: this is what forces her to turn with me! On 6, think about stepping forward (toward my starting position), PLACE THE FOLLOWER where she is to end up! Drop L-shoulder. DURING 5-6, KEEP FACING HER AND KEEP MY R-ARM ON HER BACK. 7-And-8: Make this triplet gradually with small steps. Make the triple steps distinct by putting some energy into them. On 7, Dennis throws his R-arm backward to open himself up. Also, the leader starts moving backwards to original (home base) position. This is important, since otherwise after several turns we might progress away from our slot. Keep tension while in dance position so that follower has no choice but to turn with me. There is no tension on the first part (Rock-Step and Face Off), but there is lots of tension for the remainder of the movement. Starting off: On 7 (of preceding movement), bring the R-hand up near top of head. Then draw it back. By 1, it should be way back. Homework: She can hold onto my lower back to prevent me from moving backwards on the Rock-Step. BOUNCE MORE!!! Especially on 7-And-8! Keep closer together and tension-ed in the cage! Turn her with my shoulders!!! It should feel as if she isn't there. On 5, I should be balanced!!! *** There seems to be a contradiction in my definition. In 7-And-8, it says, On 7, Dennis throws his R-arm backwards..., and under Starting Off: On 7 bring R-hand up to the top of head... *** Full Lindy Turn With Leader Foot Sweep [12-JAN-93] -------------------------------------- From open position. 1-2: as in Lindy Turn; 3-And-4: as in Lindy Turn; 5-6: as in Lindy Turn but on 5, Step (R) IN FRONT. Next time Dennis taught this he changed his mind & said to step behind; 7-And-8: On 7, start to sweep the R-foot in a wide arc to step immediately behind the L-foot on 8. Ends in open position. Full Lindy Turn With Leader Fly Break [12-JAN-93] ------------------------------------- Do a Full Lindy Turn BUT: 7-And-8: On 7, Hold; On And, Hop on L-foot while lifting R-knee upward; On 8, Come down & step (stomp) on R-foot. Full Lindy Turn With Scissors & Shuffles [05-JAN-93] *5 *6 ---------------------------------------- This is a styling step which replaces the last part of a Full Lindy Turn and the first part of a following Lindy Turn. Do a Full Lindy Turn BUT: On 5, Step (R) IN FRONT. 7-And-8: "Kick-Jump-Touch": R-foot kick to the right, jump onto R-foot, touch with L-foot. Then, (Shuffles): 1-And-2-And: On 1, Kick (L), Ball (L). On 2, Kick (R), Ball (R). 3-And-4: Face Off. Else, (more Scissors): 1-And-2: "Kick-Jump-STEP": On the step, step on the ball of the foot, NOT on the heel. KEEP THE HEEL AWAY FROM THE FLOOR. 3-And-4: Face Off. Think about hopping! D&D move about 12 inches from side-to-side on the 'Scissors'. Keep upper body level when doing the scissors and shuffles part. Groucho Skip Steps [26-JAN-93] ------------------ From Jockey position. 1-2: On 1, Rock (L); On 2, Step (R); 3-4: On 3, Hop forward on RIGHT-foot, moving forward (really leap high) & move the follower in front (as in Groucho) taking her UP high with me. On 4, Step (forward) on L-foot. 5-6: On 5, Walk forward (R-foot); On 6, Walk forward (L-foot); 7-8: On 7, Hop forward on L-foot, moving forward, turning slightly inward. On 8, Step on R-foot & get to the follower's Left-side. Repeat several times. Mantra: "Back-Step-Skip-Step-Walk-Walk-Skip-Step" Jump on 3 and 7. To getout: On 7, let go of follower with R-H; On 8, put L-foot forward BUT DON'T STEP ON IT. Remain facing the follower. Ends in open position. Heel Touches [16-SEP-92] ------------ From Varsouvienne position. (after Pull To Promenade) 1-2: Both leader & follower do a RIGHT Rock-Step, while bending our bodies forward. 3-4: On 3, Heel R-foot to the Right; On 4, Step R-foot center; 5-6: Mirror 3-4. 7-8: Same as 3-4. 1-2: Mirror 3-4. 3-4: RIGHT Rock-Step. 5-6: On 5, Kick R-foot forward. On 6, step on R-foot. 7-8: On 7, Kick L-foot around while turning 180 degrees to the Right. Lean away from the kicked foot. On 8, Step on L-foot in front. 1-And-2: Shuffle backwards. 3-4: Rock_Step. The next step in their sequence was Airborne Exit From Dance. Kick Away [01-SEP-92] --------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step; 3-And-4: Face Off; 5-6: On 5, Jump forward on R-foot, throwing follower behind me; On 6, L-foot; 7-8: On 7, hop again on L-foot; On 8, hop onto R-foot, TURNING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER, moving L-foot somewhat behind (think of falling forward to do this). 1-2: "Kick Away" On 1, Kick L-foot forward; On 2, Move L-foot to R-knee; Finish a Lindy Turn movement. Beats 5 thru 2 are all hops. On 6 thru 1, continue turning towards the right; Keep my L-elbow bent so that we don't get too far apart. Note: this is different from J&S Kick Away and from J&S Flying Lindy. Lindy Cuddle [18-AUG-92] ------------ Same as J&S Open Position To Basket. From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: "Face Off" 5-6: 7-And-8: Ends in basket position. If followed by Triplets: On And, step to my Right (away from the follower) On 8, Step almost behind the follower. The follower turns less than 180 degrees on this movement. The leader must run around the follower. Lindy Syncopated Break Turn [15-SEP-92] --------------------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step 3-And-4: "Face Off" 5-6: On 5, Step (R-foot) BEHIND & lift our joined hands. On 6, pull with R-H 7-8: On 7, *** On 8, Hold. Ends in ***. Lindy To Jockey --------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: "Face Off" 5-6: 7-And-8: Ease follower into Jockey position. On 5, it is easier to step in front on R-foot. Log Roll w/Lock Turn & Break [05-JAN-93] ---------------------------- From facing dancers. (after a Flat Break) Leaders must have weight on the R-foot. Repeat the following: On 1, Fall onto L-foot crossed in front of R-foot; On 2, Hop middle on R-foot, kicking L-foot forward; On 3, Fall onto L-foot crossed behind R-foot (this will kick the R-foot forward); On 4, Hop middle on R-foot; Keep upper body squared off (facing) the follower at all times. Hips are twisted but body should be facing your partner. Arms: Hold arms up out front with the elbows to the side. On 1, R-arm forward (as L-arm backward); On 3, L-arm forward (as R-arm backward); Lock Turn & Break (GETOUT) ----------------- On 5, Kick L-foot; On 6, Cross L-foot in front of R-foot; On 7, Pivot 360 degrees; On And-8, LEFT-right. Ends in facing dancers. (Reverse /) Long Legged Charlestons (Kicks) w/Flat Break [05-JAN-93] -------------------------------------------------------- From facing dancers. (after a Flat Break) On the preceding Flat Break, on 8 put weight over LEFT-foot. 1-6: Hop on the LEFT-foot, turning to the LEFT in place for a total of 360 degrees, leaning to the LEFT with the R-Knee stuck out. Toggle swinging the Lower R-leg back & forth from the knee below. On ODD beats, lower leg should be kicked out; on EVEN beats, lower leg should be bent inward. 7-8: On 7, land flat on both feet to end facing; On 8, hold. Ends in facing dancers. Then reverse it (hop on R-foot turning toward the RIGHT). On 1, turn 1/4 & Kick. Be careful not to kick your partner. Arms: Easy way: straighten arms out & put them behind you. Hard way: Wave them all over. Both of us use the same feet at the same time. Pointies w/Break [26-JAN-93] ---------------- From facing dancers. (after a Flat Break) 1-2: On 1, put L-foot forward, flat on the floor (NO WEIGHT) & point index finger of R-hand forward; On 2, Hold; 3-4: On 3, put L-foot behind R-foot (NO WEIGHT) & look backward while pointing index finger of R-hand backward; On 4, Hold; 5-6: as in 1-2; 7-And-8: On 7, Hold; On And-8, Break step. Ends in open position. Leader always points with the R-H. Pull And Push [15-SEP-92] ------------- From R-H to R-H. 1-2: On 1, turn 1/4 Right & heel with the LEFT-foot. We should be in Tandem, follower in front. On 2, Hold. 3-4: On 3, turn 1/2 Left & heel with the RIGHT-foot. We should be in Tandem, leader in front. 5-6: On 5, turn 1/2 Right & heel with the LEFT-foot (as in 1). On 6, Step on L-foot while pushing the follower to make her spin. 7-And-8: We both turn. When changing directions, pivot then change feet. Ends in ***. Pull To Promenade [15-SEP-92] ----------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: Instead of a normal "Face Off", just pull the follower forward. On 3, put her R-H in my R-H & I start moving around her to get into Varsouvienne position. 5-6: Walk-Walk, turning to the Right as a couple. 7-8: Walk-Walk, turning to the Right as a couple. (Note: Follower does a triple step on 7-And-8). Ends in Varsouvienne position, with both of us on the same foot. Next step can be Heel Touches. R-H Tuck Syncopated Under Arm [18-AUG-92] ----------------------------- From open position with WRONG HANDS HELD. 1-2: Open up to be side-by-side (as in Flip Follow); 3-4: On 3, Tuck, bring the follower's other hand to my other hand. On 4, Step, let go with original hands & Spin the follower (she will turn twice on 5-6). 5-6: On 5, step in front; On 6, turn 1/4 to start the Leader Under Arm. Move towards the follower. 7-And-8: On 7, finish turning. Ends in open position. On the Leader Under Arm, Dennis suggests getting down low & keeping my L-arm into my body. Shoulder Turn [12-JAN-93] ------------- From open position. 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: "Face Off" but on 3 put my R-H on the follower's L-shoulder & L-arm by my L-side such that the follower's arm is straight. 5-6: On 5, pull & spin & jump around the follower (I circularly turn to end in her original spot). Land with my feet apart. Think about taking my L-H all the way through & end it out by my L-side (as if a Tap Dance Freeze). This is important in case the follower is off balance, I can support her. Give the follower a nice large rounded turn. I will need to move more around her. 7-And-8: On 7, hold. On And-8, break (L,R). Ends in open position. Pull with the RIGHT-hand. Do not crank with the LEFT-hand! Dennis jumps with his feet spread apart, and when he lands, his hands are out in front to the side in the "safe" position (baseball referee). On the first part of this movement, keep my L-H (her R-H) low. On 5, step BACKWARDS & turn to face my initial position. We exchange places on this movement. Think about turning the follower IN PLACE. Skip Step sequence ... [02-FEB-93] ---------------------- Skip Step And Reverse --------------------- From reverse promade (after Apache To Reverse Promenade). 1-2: Rock-Step; 3-4: Skip-Step; 5-6: Skip-Step. On 6 turn 1/4 In & let go of R-H. 7-8: Rock-Step. Reach under the follower's L-arm to grab her R-arm (using my R-H) in front (as in Square Dance Promenade). Skip Step w/Outside Scoop Turn ------------------------------ 1-2: Skip-Step; 3-4: Skip-Step; 5-6: Skip-Step. On 6, turn 1/4 towards the follower & get low. 7-8: On 7, take our joined hands forward up & over while pivoting on L-foot to turn 3/4 so that I am a Belle. When doing this turn, our shoulders should be pretty much touching the whole time. On 8, feet together. Take A Walk (Crossover Boogie Walks) ------------------------------------ 1-2: On 1, Slide L-foot way back. On 2, Hold. 3-4: On 3, Hold but bring my R-H over my L-H to place the follower's R-Arm & my L-Arm intertwined. Release my hold with the L-H. On 4, Hold. 5-6: On 5, do my first Boogie Walk step to the Left. 7-8: 1-2: 3-4: 5-6: On 5, Point. On 6, Hold. 7-And-8: On 7, Hold. On And-8, break step. Ends in open position. Suzie Q's Circling Right then Left [19-JAN-93] ---------------------------------- From facing dancers (after a Flat Break). On 8 of preceding movement, clap hands & kick out RIGHT foot. Then proceed to do Suzie Q's in place turning 360 degrees to the Right (1-2, 3-4, 5-6); On 7, hold; On 8, clap & kick out LEFT foot. Then proceed to do Suzie Q's in place turning 360 degrees to the Left (1-2, 3-4, 5-6); finish with a Break. Ends in facing dancers. Swing Out With Hand Change *1 *2 -------------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step. Push the follower back behind me for the Rock-Step. To do this, push with the L-H dropping the L-shoulder & straighten the R-arm. Look at the follower. Stay in place for the Rock-Step but just move the foot back. Also, STAY LOW! 3-And-4: Make this triple step SMALL! It's important to get in front of the follower by count 3 so she doesn't think this is a "Face Off". Lean slightly backward by 4. 5-6: Change hands behind follower's back. 7-And-8: Follower finishes turning. Ends R-H to R-H. Concentrate on moving the follower to the other side (as in a normal Swing Out) instead of concentrating on changing the hands. It's much more important to get the follower moving! The hand change will then feel much smoother. Tandem Charleston *3 *4 *5 ================= From tandem position. 1: LEFT-foot backwards (no weight); 2: Hold; 3: LEFT-foot forward (DO NOT STEP ON IT); 4: LEFT step (center); 5: RIGHT-foot forward (DO NOT STEP ON IT); 6: RIGHT-foot center (DO NOT STEP ON IT); 7: RIGHT-foot backwards (DO NOT STEP ON IT); 8: RIGHT step (CENTER, slightly behind and parallel to the L-foot). Grab the follower's wrists or the back of her hands. My arms should be on the outside of her's, not on top of her's. Keep my shoulders parallel to her shoulders for the entire movement. Arms: On 7, RIGHT-arm should be forward!!! Our hands should be held at the follower's waist level. Tootsie Roll *1 *2 *4 *5 ============ From dance position. Two full basics. On 1st basic, keep moving forward. Distance is travelled on this movement. 1st basic: 1-2: Rock-Step. 3-And-4: "Face Off" (sorta) 5-6: Start turning inward 360 degrees while continuing moving forward. Do not let go of my L-H (her R-H) but let go of my R-H. 7-And-8: Keep moving forward! Place my R-H on top of her L-H. Move my R-H up over and down to end on top of hers. 2nd basic: 1-2: Kick outside foot twice. 3-And-4: Start moving backwards, turning away from each other. Keep L-H in the small of my back. Think about making the follower moving out in front of me (make her move further than me). 5-6: On 5, raise the L-H & start turning under. We should be shoulder-to-shoulder. On 6, I should have turned to face my initial facing direction. (We are probably back-to-back). Don't turn too far. The follower however should be about 1/2 way through her turn. Note: the follower starts turning first. Make 5-6 be one continuous movement. The arm movement is like a large circular up & over. 7-And-8: Turn the remaining 180 degrees. Traveling Charleston [10-APR-92] ==================== From tandem position. 1-2: as in Tandem Charleston. 3-4: On 3, turn 1/4 LEFT, kicking L-foot. Stand straight up, leaning shoulders backward. On 4, step forward (L-foot). 5-6: Kick (R); Step (R). 7-8: Kick (L); Step (L). Turn 1/4 RIGHT on 7 and on 8. 1-2: Kick (R); Step (R). 3-4: Kick (L); Step (L). 5-6: On 5, Turn 1/4 LEFT, kicking (R-foot) forward (i.e., think about turning LEFT into the follower & kicking towards her) On 6, move R-foot to center (as in Tandem Charleston). 7-8: as in Tandem Charleston. This is like: Tandem Charleston Interrupt After 1/2 with ... Turn 90 degrees on: 3 (turn LEFT), 7 (turn RIGHT), 8 (turn RIGHT), and 5 (turn LEFT). On 3 (in the first 8 counts), my hands should be up high. The lead on 3 should be strong. I should move the follower's L-elbow into my L-shoulder area. Triplets [18-AUG-92] -------- From basket position. (get in from Lindy Cuddle) 1-And-2: On 1, Cross L-foot in front; On And, R-foot to the Right; On 2, Step on L-foot LUNGING to the Left; 3-And-4: Mirror 1-And-2. Repeat the above several times. Keep the steps small but move the follower (who is in front) from side-to-side. Dennis kinda leans over, bending forward when he does this movement. Note: The follower's feet is similar but Crosses BEHIND not in FRONT (on 1,3,5,7,etc.) Getout: (With Flea Hop Chase) ----------------------------- 1-2: On 1, LET GO OF LEFT-HAND, KEEP HOLDING ONTO R-HAND. Turn 90 degrees to the LEFT, pulling the follower in front, stepping slightly forward on the ??R-foot??; On 2, Step forward on the R-foot, pull follower backward to my L-side (I must move forward). 1-2 feels kinda like a Sling Shot. 3-And-4: Run around the follower to face her. 5: Skip, moving forward, on L-foot, using the whole body to kick the R-foot. 6: Mirror 5. 7: Same as 5. 8: Break Step (L-R). On 5,6,7, leader walks forward as follower walks backward. Tuck Double Underarm w/Flat Break [05-JAN-93] --------------------------------- From dance position. 1-2: Rock-Step; 3-4: Tuck-Step; 5-And-6: Double Underarm for the follower; 7-8: On 7, jump & land feet apart; On 8, hold. Like J&S Tuck Double Underarm Freeze. The Leader uses a LARGE LOOPING ACTION with the hand over the Follower's head. This is contrary to normal Swing in which the joined hand is directly over the Follower's head. Tuck Exit To Open Position *3 *4 -------------------------- From tandem position. 1-2: As in Tandem Charleston (L-foot backwards & Hold); 3-4: On 3, step on LEFT-foot slightly behind and parallel to R-foot & STAY ON IT. On 4, touch backwards with R-foot (no weight) & throw the follower by taking her R-hand (with my R-H) to my L-side to turn her (release my L-H). Make sure to grab her wrist. Also start moving my body away from her. 5-6: On 5, Step (R) & spin the follower back the other way (using the wrist & let go). On 6, Step (L). 7-And-8: Triple step (R, L, R) as follower continues turning. Or, on 8 step on R-foot. Ends in open position. Move backwards during this movement so that the follower has space in which to turn. Optional getout: 7-8: On 7, kick R-foot forward; On 8, Step on R-foot. Tuck Underarm Into Tandem Position (10-count) *3 *4 ---------------------------------- From dance position (jockey). Rock-Step: Tuck-Step: On Tuck, optionally kick L-foot forward instead of "Touch"; On Step, send the follower out to my L-side with an Under Arm, moving somewhat with her to my Left. Kick-Cross: Kick (R) to the Right. Change hands on "Kick". Get her hand early while she is still coming out of the turn. This can be facilitated by having the turning hand higher than usual over her head. Step (R), optionally crossing in front of L-foot; Kick-Cross: Kick (L) to the Left. Lean body to the Right, R-knee bent, kicking way out to the Left. Push with the hand on "Kick"; Step (L), optionally crossing in front of R-foot. Kick-STEP: Kick (R), pulling her into Tandem Position; Step (R). Be sure to step BACK on R-foot. DO NOT CROSS IT. Ends in Tandem Position. On the second Kick, get her R-hand underneath NOT above. The leading is done on the "Kick" (or slightly before): 1st Kick: Change hands; 2nd Kick: Push with the hand; 3rd Kick: Pull with the hand; When doing the "Kick-Cross/Step", make sure to change weight when stepping on it. Step onto a BENT knee. Be sure to lean away from the kick.
