As 35 year veterans of Square Dancing, Walt and Louise Cole have shown what dedicated people they are to our favorite activity. They began Square Dancing in 1960 with the Whitney Whirlers. Walt began calling and belonged to the Hobby Callers Club ~ a group learning to become callers and cuers. The Coles have attended 18 National Conventions, and have served as panelists and clinicians at many of the Nationals. Walt also served as Vice Chairman for Contra and Vice Chairman for Seminars as well as Bid Session for the 1991 Salt Lake National Convention.

In 1975 Walt was the first Utah Caller to receive and invitation to Callerlab and has served on that International Callers Organization in a variety of positions. The Coles were charter members of Roundalab, and joined Legacy in 1979. They served on the executive board of Legacy for 4 years before assuming the Chairmanship. They are also charter member of Contralab. Walt has been an active member of Northern Utah Callers Council, and has served .in all offices. Walt and Louise have been feature writers for numerous Square Dance magazines as well as Legacy Log, Club Leadership Journal and many other Square and Round Dance news media. Walt has recorded Contras and Rounds on 4 different record labels.

Louise Cole received the 1st Annual WALT AND LOUISE COLE SERVICE AWARD for exemplary contributions to the educational aspect of American Folk Dancing, including: Square Dancing, Round Dancing, and Contra throughout Utah, the United States and Canada.

This award has been given every year to outstanding individuals and couples who have given his/her time, talent and expertise to Square Dancing.
